What is the most thought-provoking and/ or philosophical quote you've ever heard in a video game? For me, it's got to be the following, which is a quote by the character Jacob Hargreave from Crysis 2:

Will there been an afterlife, I wonder? Choirs of angels? Or a fiery pit? One unlearns these falsehoods over time, but the child who learned to fear hell is never really gone. To tell the truth, I think I had enough of afterlives as it is - this one has been pretty purgatorial. Almost fifty years floating in supercooled jelly like some medical specimen, thoughts creeping like rats through cramped silicon corridors of machines trapped behind video screens and camera systems. Never sleeping, never resting, never ceasing to think about the world you no longer belong to. No, if this is a taste of the afterlife, I think simple oblivion will do nicely.Jacob Hargreave

I came in here to post the exact same quote from Crysis 2 (incidentally, one of the few well written lines in the whole game). I guess great minds think alike :)

"The wind... it is.... blowing"-Ganondorf after his death in Wind Waker. So much weight and meaning behind those lines. It's a truly powerful moment in the game. The whol game was pretty much poetry.

"My children... Listen to me.

I have lived regretting the past.
And I have faced those regrets.

If only I could do things over again...
Not a day of my life has gone by without
my thoughts turning to my kindom of old.

I have lived bound to Hyrule.

In that sense, I was the same as Ganondorf.

But you...

I want you to live for the future.

There may be nothing left for you...

But despite that, you must look forward
and walk a path of hope, trusting that it
will sustain you when darkness comes.

Farewell...

This is the only world that your ancestors
were able to leave you.

Please...forgive us."- King Daphnes Nohansen Hyrule from Wind Waker

It's a game about the dangers of nostalgia and living a life of nothing but what you are comfortable with. If you stay on your cozy little island nothing will come of your life. Moving forward holds no certainty whatsoever. It is a path as mysterious and uncertain as the vast ocean, but if you don't move forward and leave your comfort zone, there will be no growth or promise of better things.

^Its from Planescape Torment, gosh I love the proper answer given to that question.

Anyway, here's another quote from that game:

"Endure. In enduring, grow stronger" - Dak'kon

There's just something about this simple quote that I really find inspiring and it has really stuck with me after playing the game. I pretty much always say it to myself when in a tough situation, just as a way to keep my head straight and to stay positive.

I think I'll just stop there for now, pretty much every piece of dialogue in that masterpiece of a game is worth quoting.

Agreed. Torment has some of the best quotes ever.

Nordom - Attention, Morte. I have a question: do you have a destiny... a purpose?
Morte - Is Annah still wearing clothes?
Nordom - Affirmatory.
Morte - Then, the answer is yes.

A very interesting and at times, inspirational thread. Alas, I do not have much to contribute but I shall do my best. "Either you have an enviable memory, or a pitiable life, to know nothing of regret." If I think of more, I'll add them. :P

"the cake is a lie" -Portal

"War. War never changes."-Fallout

Anything from the Legacy of Kain games. Pity games these days didn't have such rich dialogue like those did, this one always stuck with me

"Given the choice whether to rule a corrupt and failing empire or to challenge the Fates for another throw, a better throw against one's destiny... what was a king to do? But does one ever truly have a choice? One can only match move by move the machinations of Fate and thus defy the tyrannous stars."

Probably going to get some flak for mentioning Metal Gear, but here goes:

The foibles of politics and the march of time can turn friends into enemies just as easily as the wind changes. Ridiculous, isn't it? Yesterday's ally becomes today's opposition. [...]So then what is an enemy? Is there such thing as an absolute, timeless enemy? There is no such thing and never has been. And the reason is that our enemies are human beings like us. They can only be our enemies in relative terms.

Probably a lot of what Andrew Ryan says in Bioshock, but these are my favourites:

"A man chooses, a slave obeys"

"We all make choices, but in the end, our choices make... us"

Then I have this one from God of War 3: "Hope is what makes us strong. It is why we are here. It's what we fight for when all else is lost".

And then finally this one from Fallout 3: "War... war never changes"

I like some of GOWs quotes too

GOW I:

"Ten years, Athena! I have faithfully served the gods for ten years! When will you leave me of these nightmares?"

"God of war. I haven't forgotten you. For what you did that night, this city will be your grave..."

"The monster you created has returned... to kill you!"

"The Gods of Olympus have abandoned me, now there is no hope!"

GOW II:

"Achoice from the gods, is as useless as the gods themselves."

"Athena! You conspire against me?"

GOW III:

"The hands of death could not defeat me. the sisters of fate could not hold me. and YOU will not see the end of this day, i WILL have my revenge"

"ZEUS!YOUR SON HAS RETURNED!"

From Metal Gear Solid 2, towards the end where Snake and Rayden are walking through a tunnel, Snake says

"Find something to believe in, and then pass it on to the future."

Rayden responds with something like "what should I find?"

Snake responds, "That's YOUR problem"
