So i understand playstation was orignally meant to be an add-on for the SNES but then the two companies spilt. What do you think gaming would be like today if they had stayed together? Would things like sega and atari have survived and still be making consoles today? or would they still have perished and nintendo would be totally dominating the market?

So overallwhat do you think would have happened if they had stayed together?

I think they probably would have eventually decided to make it a full-fledged console rather than an add-on.

Honestly I couldn't see playstation staying with nintendo all the way up till now. I mean in my opinion they would have realized eventually that they would succeed by going solo.

I think they might have talked Nintendo into N64 going with a disk based system instead of carts still, and they might have stayed with them for that gen, but they probably would have split off at some point soon after. It might have chnaged Sega's decisions, but who knows how that would have changed them.

I think we (fortunately) still would eventually have seen them split.

  • There wouldn't be the kind (or anywhere NEAR the amount) of Mature-rated games.
  • Blu-Ray might never have existed (or might have come years later?)
  • Nintendo would have actually attained the highest praised controller (the PS3 controller that is) currently existing.
  • I would be playing Killer Instinct 3 probably right now.
  • The disc-based Nintendo console would be HD already and had it's motion controller much sooner.

...those are a few ideas I can think of.

I think that sega would've quickly lost in 64 bit (so nintendo would dominate then), but the atari would be quick to come out with a 128 bit console and microsoft would come in it this generation.

Playstation+Nintendo would of been hell for Atari back then and a nightmare for Xbox today.

Damn, I wish I could think of a witty poem about a relationship gone wrong right now...

I think in this case, Jack Sparrow said it best: "It would never have worked between us, darling."

Lol, the above post was too funny. But I think if the two companies did stay together and the CD addon did came out, it probably wouldn't have done better than the Sega CD addon. It's hard to say, but that's what I think.

Maybe gaming wouldn't have grown into what it is today, the PS1 got young adults gaming besides kids. Xbox wouldn't have existed because the market would have been too small. Sega would have died anyway and maybe Nintendo would get a monopoly on gaming. Untill somewhere in 2002+ a new small company started and tried to launch a new system.

just speculating here....but if ninty and sony did work together on future consoles after the snes-playstation and they worked well together....monoply. against the combined might of sony and nintendo...there could be no victory. sega would be quickly wiped out and MS just wouldnt bother as it would cost too much money to compete. of course that was never going to happen. both companies are back stabbing, ruthless, cuthroat, brutal, savage, pillaging mad baskets...with severe god complexes. thats why there so successful. one was always going to backstab the other and try and take it all.

I dunno....Atari was already in the death spiral. Sega might have survived, but maybe a Nintendo-Playstation alliance would have just killed it faster. I think Microsoft was going to enter the market regardless, so it would still be a sony-nintendo-microsoft environment.

The n64 wouldn't have really existed as we know it and you would have gotten discs on the n64 and it would have been the most unstoppable console of all time. The saturn was a failure and there would have been nothing else in nintendo's way. It would have had all the third party support the psone had and more, plus the Nintendo first party games and the Rareware games. Man that thing would have been godly
