Well, I just got thinking a while ago. Games are becoming more and more expensive and they are coming out very frequently. I personally think there are only few companies that should really be allowed to make games that are worth the money. For example, Valve. Unlike other companies (with the exception of L4D2), they aren't putting out a game EVERY single year, and when they do, its because they have multiple teams working on different projects for a long time. Left 4 Dead had lots of changes from when it was announced (it was originally going to be terrorists).

Activision can be somewhat of an example. They are putting real work into their games, like MW2 while other companies announce a game and then it comes out like 3 months later and the title ends out looking like a pile of poop I put in the toilet every day or it has the same repetitive formula (ex. Lego Rock Band, almost every anime game, and a ton of DS and Wii games)

Does anyone else think that things are starting to get annoying with paying like $50-70 for a game you probably won't play long? Don't start talking about rentals because I'm (and probably others) are people that don't really rent games, just watch videos of them and read reviews. And do you think there should be a like 7 month waiting period per game (5 month if franchise and 3 months if port)?

I think it could suck-start a Harley. Not that good games aren't being made, this has been a pretty strong year for example, but the commercialism of it and the excessive overwhelming need to sell attitude over anything else is beyond offputting. That's why I've become primarily an import gamer this gen.

Let them release as many titles as they want - nobody is obligated to buy every game that comes down the turnpike. Also, even at $60 to buy new, and supposing you get say, around 10 hours of entertainment from it, where else can you entertain yourself for what amounts to $5-6 dollars per hour? Now let's suppose you get several dozen or even several hundred hours of enjoyment from it... starts looking like cheap entertainment now, doesn't it?

Well I mean I'd be fine paying like $30-50 like it used to be but I think they're just got too far with the pricing. And about the games being released, what I sorta meant was I wish they released games that were worth buying, even though we don't have to buy the crap they keep putting out, I wish they wouldn't make a game that looks good, you buy it for about $55 and then you play it. You maybe 1 hour of enjoyment and then after, you never touch it again. That happened with a present to me and I actually feel kinda bad because it was like $50 and I never play it

Me and my friend had a little talk about Virtual Reality gaming once. I started talking about how you would feel like your in the game. He was like sure, that would be fun, but what happens when you play an FPS? You'd start flipping out because you'd be getting "shot" and it would (in a sense) put you directly into a war. And by this post, I can tell your a 360 Fanboy, am I right?

I know what you mean... the best thing is due dilligence on your part, especially considering how much product is hitting the market every week... research potential purchases thoroughly before buying, and you should be able to minimize (or even eliminate altogether) those feelings of buyer remorse...

Games are expensive this is why I sell my old games once I am done with them. Once I beat a game or get tired of it I get rid of it. There are so many games being released I don't have time to play through old games over and over again unless it has good multiplayer like Call of Duty 4.

I think it sucks, personally. These days, I find myself disappointed in just about every new game that comes out. There just isn't enough true originality and challenge anymore. It has me wondering if I'm simply growing out of video games

I think that it's sad that nothing truly seperates each system from one another in terms of gaming.

I'm sure it's due to the recession. No devs can take chances without potentially bankrupting themselves, so there's many more multiplats this gen.

But last gen every system had it's own fair share of exclusives, multiplayer games, unique experiences, and whatnot.

This gen only the Wii has it's own, unique flavor. The handhelds do too because they can't really compete with one another.

I just hope future generations go back to how they were.

like all industries it is a mixed bag. Some Devs and Publishers are really good, and I respect them (this accounts for atleast half of the Industry).

They listen to feedback, and try to reinvent/make new things.

Sadly Developers face a problem in that games are becomming too expencive to experiement too much with, since basicly a single failure can sink a studio.

Those who do bet thier money on new concepts often finds thier investments worthwhile tho.

I do not like the Yearly installment of games, I would like them to take longer and make deeper games overall, or test them better atleast. 2-3 good games each year is basicly enough for me (I am picky with my genres, and games, so 2-3 games is alot), and they are about that mark as it is now.

I also like that they are getting selfaware, and more open in the development phase, while it does create hype, it also allows for gamers to notice interresting concepts and ideas, which lets us pick the games we are interrest in before theyre made, and preorder them if possible, which in turn helps the devs. (and the retailers - outlets)

Unlike the old days where knowing if a game was good was due to word of mouth, or an act of blind luck, when buying games :S

I think it's great that top publishers/developers are putting out games frequently. This makes it really easy to find a great new game to play. I do understand what you're saying about not so good publishers putting out crap games and still charging full price for them. But there basically setting themselves up to fail and hopefully they learn from that and put more time and energy into there games. Also, it does suck that games are $60 bucks but you have to think that in the end, publishers are looking to make a large profit off of there games. That does suck for the consumer but if the game is good then you basically get your money's worth.

So you are against companies that crank out games every year but are a big supporter of Activision, who cranks out a Hero game every month and knowingly ships buggy games and suppresses reviews which would warn players about the existence of said bugs?! Ohhhhkaaay.

Anyway, I've got no problem with the industry. Its splitting, but companies making minigame collections for grannies and soccer moms doesn't bother me so long as a steady stream of games like Demon's Souls, Uncharted 2 and Bayonetta (the X360 version) hit the market alongside the minigame collections.

Yes, I think too many games come out. Some of them stink. None of them are worth $60.00.

I'm playing Bioshock right now. I really enjoy it. I've got maybe a 100 hours of fun from it. I paid $19.00 new.

sweetpotatofry

That, and developers are STILL doing stuff that they have no business doing. I'm tempted to think that developers just hate me, but then I remember that they only do this stuff simply because gamers are willing to put up with it.

I'm talking stuff like save points, excessively long cutscenes, and pointless fetch quests designed solely to artificially extend the game's length. This stuff has been going on forever, and no one has EVER liked it. The fact that game developers (even GOOD ones) are STILL doing the stuff that gamers should have long since stopped tolerating in any kind of capacity, just turns me off from games in general.

Another thing has to do with technological innovation. As games get more expensive to make, and production values increase, they increasingly become more like the Summer Blockbuster Movie. Now, ask yourself what people expect from the typical summer blockbuster movie. Those kinds of movies make a ****-ton of money. Now ask yourself how demanding are the masses who prefer expensive action spectacles as their favorite types of movies. The more expensive games get, the more they'll have to appeal to an increasingly large audience. The more they have to appeal to a larger audience, the more they'll have to put a focus on the superficial stuff that gets the games sold. Similar thing with movies. Budgets are getting more and more bloated, with more of that money being used for things like special effects and explosions. More and more, games are having to hype up things such as good graphics (and explosions). The obvious visible things that make a good game commercial. Then you play the game, and notice that it really isn't all that much FUN.

The game industry is expanding and the game industry is trying to make money like every other entertainment industry out there. They are going to pump out as many games as possible and price them at the high prices.

Do I want to pay $60 for every game I want? No. But buying a game at full price is really based on whether I want to wait or not. I don't have to buy games full price and no one does but people don't want to wait so they buy the game full price and then complain about it. Most of the games nowadays are built with an online multiplayer in mind so if there is a lack of replay value, it's usually because people don't have online and the single player is lacking.

And if publishers and developers want to put out games, then they shouldn't have to wait 7 months to wait until the next development of their game. They have families and they have bills to pay. Game development should continue as normal.

^^ makes a good point about Summer blockbusters. i think it's disheartening that fans expect sequels pay for the same game with a different name, where as people who don't think there needs to be more originality and IP's, only to criticize them when they arrive. Money makes the world go around and unless you remove the middle man (publisher), things will continue the way they are...forever

I think it's doing great right now. Having been an avid gamer since the Atari 2600 days I'm enjoying gaming more then ever. Excellent quality games seem to be coming out left, right, and center these days. It's nice to have so much great software to choose from. I also think the prices are quite fair. Also price drops come much more swiftly and lot's of places have great deals on both new and old games.
