Over the past few years (five or so) I've found it very difficult to get really lost in a game. Even when I can, I rarely stay lost. I freaking love video games, but lately I haven't been able to find specific games that I love. Strange as it sounds, I guess I'm sort of missing that feeling of being at work and saying (in my head, in case it needs to be stated), "man, I can't wait to get home and jump into _____________ game"

I think it's a result of games becoming stale as they progress, as a direct result of the repetition of environments and mechanics. After a couple hours in just about every game, I find myself saying (again, in my head), "OK, I get the idea. I wonder what else is out there?" I suppose that's just a restriction of the medium in a sense--it isn't as if a game can frequently and wildly alter its mechanics while still appearing to have some unity. But for whatever reason, I crave surprises.

I think the last game that really held my interest was the first Dark Souls, and I think a large part of it was the anticipation of new environments, new monsters, and new challenges. I rarely felt like I knew quite what to expect. But as newer entries in the franchise have emerged, it's become more and more difficult to hold my interest; most likely no fault of the games, but as a result of my familiarity with the idea.

In reality, I'm sure this is a personal problem. But I'd like to know some games that people love that, at least for them, never seem to get old.

There are many retro platformers that I never get tired of even after over 20 years such as the Super Mario Bros and Donkey Kong Country games. Every time I play games like this, they are just as fun as the first time I played them.

Civilization series never gets old, no matter what, every game has its own uniqueness to it and its great. Simcity is the same way, especially the Simcity on the snes and Simcity 2000 and 3000 on PC.

i know exactly what you mean. Its as if after 3-5hrs playing a game you feel you have seen all the game has to offer and it will be more of the same but with such a huge backlog its then easy to switch game rather than complete said game.

For a bit i could not put fallout 4 down but since i got good guns, armour, explored a lot of map i just feel at this point im not gonna get any more big suprises so less excited to play it.

Sadly I think the point of my life where I can fall in love with a single game is over; I dabble now, go from game to game, and if I am lucky I will play it for maybe a couple hundred hours. Last game I spent that kind of time with was Anno 2070, Skyrim, and SWTOR

I can name 3 games that are over 15 years old that I can still go back to and have a phenominal time.

Zelda A Link to the Past

Super Metroid

Pikmin

As for this gen, Bloodborne, Pikmin 3, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, Batman Arkham Knight, and Street Fighter V have all been amazing experiences. We'll see how they stand the test of time.

I had a similar issue, actually it was exactly the same.

So I got a game I would never have bought, through Games With Gold on Xbox 360 and that was Civilisation Revolution and I enjoyed it a lot and went back to play it over many many months, in between playing other titles of course.

After enjoying the game a lot and was really surprised by my enjoyment of it, I went to have a look for other such titles and that is when I discovered XCOM (2012).

I bought XCOM and LOVED IT! Still play it to this day. I even went and bought it again on the PC as I waited for XCOM 2 to come out in February of this year, which is in many ways, is even better than the first.

My point is, when you are feeling like you have been... Try something you wouldn't other wise have bothered with and just see how it works for you. You may discover a new found passion and get that feeling back again, when you look forward to getting home and getting some gaming in once again.

A' the best.

I've been playing Donkey Kong Country 3 with my 6 year old recently. Also Mario RPG: Legends of the Seven Stars... I like retro gaming...I've recently bought all the older systems I grew up with and still love p!aying them. You quickly realize how catered we are as gamers these days.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 (been playing this one on and off again for over ten years, and have been playing it now nearly every day for the past two months or so), Mount and Blade: Warband, Pokemon Blue/Red, Star Wars Battlefront II, Super Mario Strikers... If only Resistance 2 was still online, because the online 8 player co-op mode was one of the most addicting things for me ever.

RE5. I especially like Slayers/Team Slayers mode. I have had the game since oh about 2010 I think , when I got my PS3. I always find myself going back to it when I'm bored. Just something about killing those zombies. I like to play as Tribal Sheva because I love her bow. I also thoroughly enjoy defending against the pkers and hackers. Lol nothing like watching a aim-bot-er/turbo controller/taped down x button user/lagger/teleporter rage quiting when I beat them despite all their cheats ;) I wish they had the game for PS4 as a playable other than for rent or PS Now.

I loved Mario RPG on snes, one of the few games I bothered to play all the way to the end. I think it's pretty under-rated. Paper Mario on N64 was almost as good.

But, the game I play most over and over is Uncharted Waters. I'm always looking for a space-based game that is as close as possible to UW.

Doom (1 & 2, Hexen, Heretic, Duke 3D, Most 90's FPS's...)

Rock Band

Diablo 1 & 2

Unreal Tournament

Vampire Masquerade Redemption, Bloodlines

Elite Dangerous

Conker's Bad Fur Day

Thief 1 & 2 & 3 ( I also like the reboot, but most don't )

Mario 64

Omikron Nomad Soul

Super Metroid and Prime Trilogy

The Trauma Trilogy (Second Opinion, New Blood, Team)

Elder Scrolls Franchise (All of them)

Star Fox 64

Donkey Kong Country Franchise

Off of the top of my head these are the games I know I have played 1000's of times, and they never get old for me. I usually play at least 3 or 4 of these games every year and it is always fun.

Really good question. For me, the games that really never get old are probably the more sandbox-style games that don't necessarily have specific end points. For instance, I played Civilization V for years and years and it's only been in recent times where I've grown tired of it. The fact that I can really define what the "end" point is, and that each match is so long, are reasons why it just never got old for me (well, until recently as I say).

And then there's Cities: Skylines, which is a game I keep coming back to over and over. Again it's that whole sandbox thing; the ability to really create your own world and modify it to your heart's content. That keeps me coming back.

Years ago, it was RTS games that did this for me. I played so much of Command and Conquer: Red Alert...

Garry's Mod. It's the only game I've put more than 2000 hours into. I play it vanilla, play it with custom maps and mods, make custom maps and mods, it just never gets old.
