Disagree with all of the above for being JRPG's.
Planescape Torment
Baldurs Gate 2: Shadows of Amn
Divine Divinity (amazing that so few people played this)
System Shock 2
Diablo 2

just because you don't like JRPG's doesn't mean others won't. personally i don't like a whole lot of western RPG's.

just because you don't like JRPG's doesn't mean you don't include them. personally i don't like many western rpg's but there are some good ones like neverwinter nights, planescape torment (which you have listed)
Well, first off it's essential to play Chrono Trigger. That is still one of the greatest games ever made, the story, characters, gameplay and settings are all original and well executed.
I also reccomend Final Fantasy VI
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy VIII (those are the golden 3 FF's)
Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Calibur. (I'm hesitant to call it cl@ssic, since it feels new, but it actually is just as old as Final Fantasy VIII, still an amazing game by all rights)
and Chrono Cross.
I'll go ahead and back some peoples opinions:
Final Fantasy (especially IV, VI, VII, XI, and X to me)
Kingdom Hearts (Pretty essential to play 1 before 2)
Chrono Trigger/Cross
I'll also go out on a limb and suggest Legend of Legaia. I played the first one long ago and LOVED the storyline. I've also heard good things about Xenogears and Vagrant Story. Honestly, you can hardly go wrong with a Squaresoft/Enix game.
Planescape: Torment
Baldurs Gate 2
Fallout series
Final Fantasy 3
Pool of Radiance
and i don't care what people say i thought Secret of Mana was a blast.
NES
Final Fantasy I
Crystalis
SNES
Final Fantasy II
Crono Trigger
Earthbound
Bahamut Lagoon
Tales of Phantasia
Super Mario RPG
Playstation
Final Fantasy 7
Final Fantasy 8
Final Fantasy 9
Persona
As well as all the Fire Emblem Games which some are English and others are Japenese. You can still play the Japenese ones if you have Great Common Sense of Video games but fire emblem in particular.
Final Fantasy III
Final Fantasy X (I'd call it c/assic (c l a s s is forbidden)
Final Fantasy X-2 (loved that game, don't care what others think).
The Elder Scrolls: Arena, Daggerfall and Morrowind
Zelda: A Link to the Past (the only Zelda game I like).
For hidden gems in the 8 and 16 bit ages, look into Destiny of an Emperor I & II, Illusion of Gaia, and Ogre Battle, and Phantasy Star I, II, and IV.
I may be missing some of the classics, but I'd recommend just about any Final Fantasy (skip Mystic Quest and Tactics, if you ask me), Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Xenogears, Legend of the Dragoon, Parasite Eve 1 and 2, Zelda; A Link to the Past, Brave Fencer Musashi, Morrowind, Oblivion, Baulders Gate 1 and 2, Neverwinter Nights, Diablo 1 and 2.
As someone above me stated, I don't think you can go wrong with Squaresoft/Square Enix. I've not played a Squaresoft/Square Enix game I didn't love to this date (with the forementioned Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest and Final Fantasy Tactics...I didn't play Final Fantasy XI, so I can't talk about it).
I can name a square game that sucked bad... Saga Frontier... eeww I hated that game.
Everyone else pretty much covered the games you should play. I'll throw one or two not mentioned.
Shadowrun- SNES
Valkryie Profile - PS1/psp
Vagrant Story - PS1
Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance 1&2 - PS2
Fable - xbox
Tales of Symphony - Gamecube

I've actually never played Saga Frontier, but I remember looking at it once a while back.
Also, thank you for mentioning Fable. I'd forgotten about that game.
Oh and to clear things up i prefer JRPG's to westerns, but i have played the first baldur's gate and loved it
For now i think ill pick up legend of dragoon (beat 1st 2 discs and third was scratched so ill buy again)
as wel as FF Anthology and Chronicles
And Grandia and Xenogears
lookin at Lunar but really expensive btw i only have a PS2 to play rpg's on now so don't reccomend any snes for me to play, but u can still say if they're good or not
FF12, Dragon Quest 8, Diablo 2, Dark Cloud 2, Neverwinter Nights, Morrowind, Shining Force NEO, Atelier Iris, Persona 3, Valkyrie profile 2, Digimon World 4, WoW and The Wild Arms Series.
Bolded titles are epic; the bolded and underlined game is the best ever.
FFVII sucked..FFVIII is the best.kya-kun
Actually FFIX is the best. Not that I am biased.spanky333
I come closer to agreeing with Spanky. Final Fantasy IX is perhaps the best Final Fantasy ever, but I personally loved Final Fantasy VII as well, so it's a tie between VII and IX for me.
[QUOTE="MarcusAntonius"]Guys, not to be a jerk, but I don't know that last gen RPGs qualify as classic, though they may become classics at some point.7CloudStrife7
that's what I thought, but I looked up the word classic on dictionary.com lol, just to look at it specifics, and I do not believe it actually mentions anything as far as age goes, but yea I would agree, generally people refer to things that are older when concerning classics, my thoughts for games would be atleast 10 years old
Eh, some things become an instant classic, think about ocarina of time, that game instantly became a hit, and in the early 2000's i'd say it was considered a classic
but yeah lotta good games listed, enough to keep me busy for quite awhile
