I think Dark Souls (and Demon's Souls) are amazing and probably the best RPGs on consoles.

My question is to those who haven't played it yet, what's holding you back from wanting to experience one of the best and most surprising games of this gen?

Is it:

  • The difficulty?
  • Does it require too much patience to play so it turns you off to it?
  • Too old school in nature.
  • Or are you planning to play it but not right now, maybe when you have time or at a price drop.
  • Or the game just doesn't interest you since it's not your type of game..

For me, I think text-heavy RPGs like Skyrim and Dragon Age Origins require more patience than Dark Souls. I also love Skyrim and Dragon Age Origins, but I'm getting into Dark Souls more than those titles. Dark Souls is all about the amazing combat and I love that. The grinding isn't a boring chore and the game is very rewarding. The challenge is brutal but it isn't cheap. Everytime you beat a boss I feel so satisfied, more than any other RPG I've played.

It's just a fantastic game.

Because it ends up just raising my blood pressure and it feels more like work than a game because it is so hard

I didn't buy Demon's Souls because I don't have a PS3. I'll buy Dark Souls eventually, in fact it might be my next purchase.

I haven't gotten around to it... It does look good, but I've bought other games when I have the money. I might get it eventually.

I have an order I have been going through my library and it's still in the teens. I know Demon's Souls[only one I have] will be great, that's why I got it. That's the beauty of this hobby, there are a great number of choices to be made. If I didn't have this rule in place, I never would have played half of the games I own because there are always new titles that interest me and are just as deserving as the older games.

I just couldn't get into it. Dying over and over again is annoying. If I have to leave while there is a fight in the game I can't even pause, so I'll have to restart when I come back.

Well the first game to me was garbage and the second game is NOT going to change my opinion since it has been said that its very similar to the first. BTW, this is me putting it nicely.

I have played many difficult games in my life given I have been gaming since the original NES. But these days difficulty just doesn't agree with me. I just want to play and enjoy my expierence. Not get frustrated. I also don't feel like putting in the time to go through a game with so little life, bland environments with litte detail.

I own Demon's Souls and I have put a few hours into it but just didn't care for it. I even tried to look past the difficulty but the game was beyond bland. It's essentially an unexciting hack and slash game with a big emphasis on defense at the end of the day.

I have no money to buy Dark Souls (or anything else for that matter). I love Demon's Souls though. One of the best games I've played this gen. Not hard at all either. It just brings me back to the day where patience meant something in a game.

I don't really play my consoles much anymore, so that would be the reason. I'll be getting Dark Souls when it releases on PC though. Maybe I'll pick up Demon's Souls though if I can find it really cheap (around $10 or so).

I was put off by the difficulty for ages, then manned up and bought Dark Souls. Started playing it last week and it really is amazing. I typically go for story/narrative driven RPGs but the game does what it tries to do very well.

I haven't got far enough to really comment on the difficulty but I've actually found the learning curve quite reasonable. You just have to be patient with the game and concentrate when in combat.

The difficulty. I like playing games for their settings and story (which is why HL2 is so great IMO), so when a games gameplay (difficulty) gets in the way I get turned off. I'd still like to play it though because the setting looks interesting.

The only thing stopping me playing is the fact that if you die, you have to start all over from the very beginning unless you find some camp tent (I forget what it's called), but I watched a partial walkthrough of Dark Souls and it looks extremely frustrating, wandering around with no map only to die 3/4's of the way through because some treasure chest you opened turned out to be some monster straight out a Stephen King flick that grabs your head and bites it off before you even have a chance to react.

Then after you die, you have to find your body and collect the orbs that you lost from dieing. Real life can be frustrating enough without playing a game that focuses on pissing you off. Plus I was turned off by the 'prepare to die' slogan. Lol, I'm trying to live. I suppose it can be rewarding for those with enough patience. To each his own though.

There is no way in hell I'm going to lose my patience and get frustrated constantly just because the developer's wanted to try something different and release the games on an unchangable 'Very Hard' difficulty setting. It's pointless, they would have made more money giving the player difficulty options, and if so, I would have been interested. But I have no time for a game that isn't fun, and ridiculously challenging.

I've watched several gameplay videos and they didn't interest me in the slightest. The idea of playing an entire level over and over every time you get killed is a huge turnoff as well.

Because I'm an easily frustrated person and sorry lack of checkpoints/ save points has become archaic. And before anyone says anything I know many JRPG's still use it, hell some of my faves do... but I've heard of people losing HOURS of playtime on the Souls games... yeah not for me.

Firstly, I don't own a PS3, so I simply couldn't play it even if I wanted to right now. I know Dark Souls is coming to PC, though.

But even then, I just wouldn't have the patience for this kind of game. If there's one thing I hate in a video game it's having to do the same stuff over and over because it doesn't let me save whenever I want to.

I tried Demon Souls, but I got bored and quit. The game is just taking all the bad parts of WRPG and combinding them with the bad parts of JRPG.
