http://kotaku.com/5893780/elder-scrolls-mmo-to-be-unveiled-in-may

If you know me, you know how much I hate MMORPGs: little story, no character development, grind-centered gameplay, number-based combat, lame visuals, stupid people and microtransactions are an amazing combo that makes me want to watch the whole genre burn in seven hells.

Imagine how happy I am to hear that Bethesda is likely to soon be turning the glorious Elder Scrolls franchise into yet another online abomination.

Does this mean the series will exclusively go online from now on? Hopefully not, hopefully we'll get to see more real TES games in the future.

Guess we'll know in May.

not good news. SWTOR has pretty much killed off any chance of a KOTOR 3 and this could very well do the same thing. an MMO is a massive undertaking...bethesda would be hard pushed to to get that and a new elder scrolls SP done. still wait and see. if its an MMO in the vein of GW in terms of business model (buy the game, no sub) then it could still be cool. if its like TOR....not good.

Zenimax Online Studios is developing it,not Bethesda Game Studios so don,t worry, plus Matt Firor(Dark Age of Camelot) is on board.

http://www.zenimaxonline.com/faq.html

So no Bethesda Game Studios will still continue to develop single player elder scrolls games.

Hmmm, I'm not entirely opposed to an MMO if they still produce single-player TES games. Tamriel would sure be a good setting for an MMO.

AND MORROWIND WOULDN'T BE DESTROYED YET ZOMG, LONG LIVE THE TRIBUNAL

I think the over-reliance on multiplayer from publishers in the gaming industry as a way to try to continually cash-in on consumers has been detrimental to numerous genres....and I'm not just talking about MMO games.

In the shooter genre....there seems to be less creativity and originality in terms of single player campaigns, which have really taken a back seat, it seems like more and more publishers now wants to push out a Call of Duty clone.

...and now Single Player in RPGs looks to be taking a backseat with publishers now wanting to go MMO in an attempt to copy WoW's succcess.....we've seen the KotOR brand go MMO with SW: ToR....and now Elder Scrolls is going that route, which I figured it would only be a matter of time.

Even single player campaigns aren't really safe anymore, with draconian "always-online" now being required to play certain single player games.

I don't think this is a good idea. It'll be hard for Bethesda to make a proper ES MMO, but who knows, it might become the greatest thing since Pong.

Not really for it, but then again, playing Skryim kind of feels like playing an mmo, so I figured it's only a matter of time before they tried to expand this online.

MMO's

The bane of gaming, and the death-knell of any series.

I am saddened by this news, and consider it the funeral of Elder Scrolls.

As long as they don't stop making single-player focused entries, I'm okay with this.

Not another crappy MMO...this is getting ridiculous. Why don't they rework all the games into MMOs and FPSs? Next target for MMO conversion: Tetris!!!

People, stop paying for this crap...please!

Pretty much. I highly doubt that the main Elder Scrolls team is working on this, so it isn't a huge deal.

Warcraft died with World of Warcraft (or it is being delayed like hell, since Frozen Throne was released in 2002), so if this TES MMO have great success then goodbye to the offline games.

I was always afraid of this. It happened with KOTOR now with Elder Scrolls. If this is in the works I hope to god it tanks. I would rather never see another Elder Scrolls game again than have it turned into some MMO abomination. If your going to build an MMO then build one from the ground up and leave our beloved franchises as they are!

Although I am not surprised by this, it still annoys the snot out of me. I have never been able to get into MMOs and with this I know it will most likely be a LOOOOOOOOONG time before we see the next single player game. (if at all)

ES always felt like a single player-mmo and the players have to larp for immersion (due to the amount of choices that have the same consequences), making it a mmo sounds it's going toward the right direction. Maybe you can actually sabotage a lumber mill to cripple the economy there in the mmo. :P

I always felt like Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim were viable alternatives to mmo's for those of us who either can't play online or choose not to. Now it looks like they are becoming one in the same. Way to alienate your own market.

This post sums up the stupidity that only System Wars can seem to provide. I don't even think I'll read any posts after this one, just so I can save my IQ for a few more hours...

It is an overstatement, but there's some truth in it. Skyrim was made to appeal to the vacant eyed, drooling MMO generation, while retaining a semblance of the old Elder Scrolls glory. When a game quickly rushes through story and guilds, fails to offer any charismatic characters and focuses more on looting, leveling and crafting... you can't help but see the stained influence of the MMO subgenre.
