I know its only last gen but my favorite story is Knights Of The Old Republic. I am a big Star Wars fan and that story completely drew me in. The characters were great and building your character how you wanted to was amazing to. It had a great plot twist and is one of the best games I have played.

best story is the one in panzer dragoon (saga)

it's like you will find in the best movies after finishing saga for days I could only walk around thinking about the ending and what I had seen and after a few days I decided to look up on the internet to find websites dedicated to different theory's about the story I don't want to spoil anything but it's amazing

a good 2nd is the ones found in the ico/shadow of the colossus games. if you like these games then definetely take note of panzer dragoon (saga). what is so amazing about the ico/colossus games is the intense story in minimalistic dialog. it's a pure expression of art

For me it's a tie between Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 7, Final Fantasy 9 and Metal Gear Solid. All these games had amazing, gripping stories. They are all so great, I can't choose which has the better story.

Tales of the Abyss. It's hard to describe why without spoiling anything, but the characters and plot are just amazing!

My vote goes to Phantasy Star II : The End of the Lost Age. The game broke new ground with its epic storyline, as well as with its shocking plot twist and ending.

I'm going to vote for Legacy of Kain series simply because its writting is, dare I say, at times Shakespearian, its voice acting is orgasmic to the ears, and it creates a rather interesting world with unique vmpire lore.

I'm not sure if it counts because it was only on PC. Though it was released in '98. My favorite game story would have to be Grim Fandango's. I thought the balance of Mexican belief Film Noir and Humor was perfect. I also thought the voice acting was top notch, especially for 1998.

Popful Mail Sega CD version. I loved the quirky random humor and pretty much all the characters. Pretty much the same with Earthbound (SNES) and Mystical Ninja (N64). I think humor can be hard to do, especially in translation, but a good effort is appreciated.
