Looking for a good scary game to play. I realize that most of the creepiest games usually don't score/sell well, so I haven't played them. Any help is appreciated (try and keep it limited to last gen and current consoles). Thanks in advance.

Beat the entire resident evil series.

0,1,2,3, Code Veronica, 4.

All of those got solid reviews.

Then beat all the Silent Hills.

1,2,3,4.

Not as good scores as resi, but still great.

Then try the first Condemned, on xbox360.

Give FEAR a shot too.

F.E.A.R. was in no way scary unless you had no experience with the horror genre beforehand. It's scare tactics are so obvious and cliche it's unbelievable.

The scariest games I've ever played however are probably the original three Silent Hill games (the series sort of lost it's touch after that).

Get F.E.A.R., wait until about 1am, make sure all the lights are off, and if you live with someone, that they are all asleep, put headphones on and you will end up needing new underwear. I know I did.

The Silent Hill series, without a doubt (except number 4 which was a pile of rubbish imho). I'm a HUGE RE fan but when it comes to being scared witless then Silent Hill beats it hands down, especially number 2 imo.

I always thought Return to Castle Wolfenstein was pretty scary, especially the zombie levels. They come out from the walls, the roof, the floor, they come out everywhere!

There were sometimes when i had the pause the game to calm myself down

Try Resident Evil 4 or Parasite Eve 2.

Excellant visuals and ambient sound, terrific gameplay, deep storylines and plenty of Hollywood-quality thrills and chills.

The later levels of Clive Baker's Jericho are pretty damn creepy. Blood, vomit, and dead bodies all over the place, with creatures that where once men trying to kill you. Didn't get a good score on here though because of level design, but I've played it, and trust me it's pretty good if you're looking for a scare.

The Silent Hill series! I love them. At times they were almost painful to play because of the tension, but that's part of the fun. Just need to pause them for a breather every now and again. Wasn't a fan of The Room though, even though the concept was good the gameplay wasn't up to scratch and the graphics seemed poor. Nothing compared to SH3.

Resident Evil 1 - the mansion was scary. It had a creepy atmosphere. I wouldn't say that resi evil is generally scary though; as the series has progressed it seems that the action has replaced the creepy atmosphere. I've never really found the clinical lab settings that creey either, although saying that I really loved the underground lab in the remake of Resident Evil 1 for the Gamecube. That was really well done. A clinical setting can be creepy but it reminds me more of sci-fi than horror. I love the hospitals in the Silent Hill series because they're so dark, dingy and covered in grime.

I actually think Doom 3 for the XBox is really scary. Could hardly play that one. Having to turn off your feeble source of light in order to attack the freaky monsters in darkness was not appealing. The sound effects were good too - very unsettling. Silent Hill is usually good with that too.

Project Zero 1 & 2 had me on edge. I haven't played the third.

Overall, for me, it has to be Silent Hill.
