Clarity and aspect ratio really sets these new generation systems apart and not having an HDTV means you're not getting the full experience. I don't mean that to sound elitist, but whereas other game systems put in HD support as an afterthought, most games now are being built from the ground up with HDTV signals.
Having done so myself on a limited budget, I can safely say the cost of investing in at least something that's an HDTV (22" Gateway Widescreen monitor ~370$) isn't that outlandish. I really think it's worth it.
So, am I right if I say this?:
playing next-gen on hd = playing on the pc with the latest video card
(all you lose if you don't is some graphical detail)

I would agree. I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to play Crysis on the lowest settings possible, but it's an option for people with no alternative.

From what I hear, Crysis is such a system hog that I won't be able to even load the splash screen on my pc
What happens if I buy a new gen console and play it on my non-hd tv? Will it look that bad? Do I really need to get an hd tv as well?Black_Knight_00
There are some games that really look better on a HD-TV (GRAW for example impressed me,even if it looks great on both) but most games only look cleaner. If you can put your strandard-TV in 16:9 you will be happy even without HD.HD is great but not like it´s absolutely needed.
Still, you have to think about getting an HDTV at some point. Would you ever play a high-end PC on a monitor that doesn't support high resolutions?nopalversion
Eventually I will. But I hope my black and white tv holds a little longer.
Both the PS3 and 360 look just fine in SD. Clearly superior to last gen in terms of graphical prowess (my 360 was played in SD for about a year prior to an HDTV and I didn't lose out). However once you have an HDTV you really don't want to go back because it looks sooooo much better.
Still, don't let that detract from you getting a new console.
