Isn't MGS3 1964? Thought the idea that each of the games in the Big Boss game took place exactly 10 years apart. '64, '74, '84.

The game menu in Metal Gear Solid HD Edition has the games listed in the chronological order of the story rather than by release date, which makes it easier to play through the games in story order.

Sure thing. The hardest part when recommending the order for others to play them is that there are spoilers, one way or another. For example, if you start with MGS3 since it's chronologically first,
The fact that the Snake you are playing as not only loses his eye along the way but gets the title of Big Boss serve as surprising/meaningful plot points, while for those who played the other games first, you were simply wondering when those things would happen.
Similarly, if you play MGS4 before Peace Walker,
You'll know that Big Boss and Zero are at odds, because you find out in MGS4 that their falling out is what led to the conflicts of all of the other Metal Gear and Metal Gear Solid games that came before. In Peace Walker, you can guess that something happened between PW and Portable Ops, but the animosity isn't so great on Zero's end that he won't offer Big Boss the chance to rejoin him in his efforts.
What I tell people is to play them in the order they came out the first time around, but on replays, play them in order.

It is until Kojima himself states otherwise
