Is it worth playing Final Fantasy VII, VIII, and IX?

Hey, I'm wondering if it's worth playing these three games since I haven't played them before and I've heard a lot of good things about them. I've played X, X-2, and XII and thought they were awesome. Are they still worth playing even though they are out-dated? Do they still shine? I'm also wondering how to play the games, since I don't own a PSX. I do, however, own a PS2, but I don't know if a PS2 can play these games, and I don't know where to find them.

A PS2 can indeed play the games, however you will need a PS1 memory card in order to save.

They are definetally worth playing, they all tell great stories, and are timeless ****cs.

Much like I can still go back and play Super Mario World, these games have the same effect.

Many people will beg you to play VII, but this is actually the most expensive out of all of them to find.

You can find most of them at Amazon

Why did it censor the word classics?Mariofreak1216

It has something to do with the html of the site I believe. It cesors just the word cIass and styIe. Which if you're using the regular font, you can easily bypass by using a capital i.

Any way back on topic. Yes it is worth it to play the PS1 Final Fantasys. Though I would skip FF VII. I never liked it that much. Just a personal opinion on that one though.

I guess I should check out some local used games places and see if I can find a memory card and that games, but if not I'll try the internet. Which game should I buy first?

Yea, I'd say they're worth playing. Then again, I can only speak for VII, and let me say this: the pacing is some of the best I've seen in any game. That's one of the places it beats 6: pacing.

FF8 in my opinion is the worst final fantasy. Cool characters, decent story. But the draw system and summoning system just killed it for me. VII and IX are good though.

There, no more arguing over which final fantasy is best.

Weird, my favorite was VIII, yet I didn't put it at the top of anything.

I'd say yes, find them. Your PS2 should be able to play PS1 games, unless they're from a different region (trying to play a japanese game on an American PS2). You can find them on Amazon, IX and VIII are the cheaper of the 3.

Definitely worth it. I have played each one of them about once a year since they came out, and never get bored of them lol.

A lot of PS1 games are almost unplayable now, but Final Fantasy VII, VIII, IX still shine due to amazing storytelling.

I'm going to have to respectfully disagree. They felt NOTHING alike. Completely different art styles, plotline, and tone. They feature some of the same gameplay mechanics (what Final Fantasy doesn't?), but even still they are executed very differently to keep each experience unique.

Yes, you should play them all. I

So, FF7 is needed to play because of it's acclaim, but it's expensive as hell. FF8 is cheaper but doesn't have great gameplay, and haven't heard much about FF9. Still not sure which to get first... might just pick one at random.

FF8s gameplay is fine, it's just a little complicated.

They are all great, it dosen't really matter where you start.

FF IX is by far my favorite of the 32-bit era Final Fantasies (and second only to FF 4 on the SNES). The dialogue is well written and has a lot of genuinely funny, engaging, and entertaining moments. The art direction is more along the lines of what you might see in a children's fairy tale (characters are of the "super deformed" variety) rather than the realism that than ultra-realistic models. The envrionments are colorful and varied. Everything flows well, and the cast is very likeable and one of the best assembled for an RPG IMO. Everything about this game just oozes charm, and for me, it has that certain kind of magic where everything just clicks into one amazing package

If you've never played a Final Fantasy before, some of the fan-service type stuff sprinkled throughout the game. However, it certainly isn't integral to enjoying this excellent game. The beauty of that is, while serving as a sort of "end of an era" Final Fantasy game, it also serves as a wonderful intro to what came before it. For me, it really feels like a "Greatest of" Final Fantasy type game. I recommend it without reservation. I'm confident a fan of the genre will be a fan of this game.

I personally recomend Ff9 since that will prolly be an easier game to get into and is really well done, While Ff7 is pretty easy to udnerstand, it's really a bit dated. for some to play.

I haven't played FFVIII or IX. FFVII is worth playing. Hell, I'm playing it through a second time. But I'll just answer your questions for FFVII.

FFVII is worth playing, despite the translation being a little...iffy to me. I didn't enjoy the game too much the first time that I played it, but playing the second time around makes it more interesting. Not the best game of all time, but it's still a great FF game.

Yes, FFVII still "shines," in different parts of it anyway.

PS2 can play all of those FF games. You can't find FFVII anywhere anymore, not even at EB Games, Gamestop, etc. but there are places that sell them online. I say screw everyone else and just go for a buy-it-now on ebay. I was lucky, after doing some hunting, and found a nice used one for $40. You can still get FFVIII and IX for less then $15 on ebay as well. FFVII is rather expensive though. I'd say that the average price for a used one is around $60, but then you can always get lucky like I did.

I would play them all in order. Start with VII and play right up to XII. Well maybe skip XI because it is an MMPR (mighty morphin online thingy I can't remember the acronym).

If you only want to try one of them, I would suggest VII. It was what turned most of the planets attention towards the series in the first place. Then you want XI because I am in it.

Well my avatar is anyways.

Look at him go!

I've played an beaten those 3.

As for story line, I'm going to have to go with FF7.

For gameplay, FF8, because of its complicated gameplay. It really makes you think about whats going on.

For complete originality, and if you're really into that Japanese unique type of art, FF9. FF9 had a beautiful setting to it, and amazed me with the originality of its characters, and plot.

For a first play .. I suggest playing 9 first. If you enjoy that one, you'll enjoy the others as well.

So I went and bought FF9, I'm about 2 hours in so far and I have to say it's a pretty good game so far. I'll have to see how things get as I get deeper into the game. As soon as I beat it, I'll get FF8 and then 7. Opinions on these games are still always welcome. Thanks guys.

FF VIII, definitely. FF IX, sure. FF VII, I didn't enjoy so much, but if you want to know what the ratings are all about, play it. Most people enjoy it. :)

Also, just a warning beforehand; you'll need a PS1 memory card to save.

You can still buy new and sealed copies of FF VIII & IX off ebay for like 15 bucks a pop. However, FF VII goes for a lot more, sadly.

But, yeah; get them! They still shine, man!

And you got this ranking from where?

IMO FF7 is the most overrated FF. If I hear something about FF, FF7 is always mentioned. Drives me nuts. But then again I think it was FF7 that brought the FF name into the mainstream, so it probably became the most well know FF as a result. But still...it drives me nuts. -_-"
