What games have the best cover system?

Gears of War seems to be the only game with a decent cover system. You push A and you get behind cover. Why arent all games that have cover systems like Gears of War's?

In the other games that do have cover systems, its clumsy. You push the button for cover and your charactor is all out of control. Games I remember not having a good cover system was Gta 4, Kane and Lynch, and Max Payne 3.

The best cover system is no cover system. I vote for Quake 3.

Army of Two has it so your character automatically lifts their arms around cover so they use it but they don't stick themselves on it like some other games.
I like that idea because it sounds freee

Might not be considered a cover system, but I like controlling the character and having different stances.
STALKER's crouch -> low crouch is nice.
I like what ARMA III is trying to do with giving you different levels of standing, crouching, and prone, and then leaning.

Sometimes leaning in games seems helpful, sometimes not.

Cover systems like Gears of War and GRAW aren't allll bad though.

Gears of War is my favourite. I also really liked the cover system used in Vanquish as well.

Gears series, Mass Effect series, Uncharted Series, Vanquish. Anything that lets you slide into cover on the move is good.

Rainbow Six: Vegas & Vegas 2. Killzone 2/3's is probably the most realistic.

Mass Effect 2 & 3 (havn't played the first) Seamless cover system, rarely died in both games, and it was almost never due to poor cover mechanics. In fact, I really havn't had an issue with cover in most third person shooters I've played, for the most part anyway.

Far Cry 3 did the first person cover system so flawlessly and naturally, it felt perfect. I hope other FPS developers adopt that mechanic as the standard, if they're going to bother with a cover system at all. First person games don't really need them, but FC3 nailed what it should be if it's going to be.

The cover system in Gears of War has to be up there. I'm playing Splinter Cell: Conviction at the moment, and the cover system in that is pretty slick too!

I personally enjoyed Army Of Two: 40th Day mainly because of the fact that i love blind fire and their cover system is top-notch!

Wish I had played it.

On the subject of Bond and cover system, 007 Blood Stone was not only a decent TPS, but it also had a good cover system. It's one of your best friends in the game!

I'd say GTA IV probably as the best for me, then again there are many games with cover systems that work just as well.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, some were decayable, giving limited time, it meant the game flowed and constant movement was needed, and when you were behind solid cover, you were safe, giving you time to breathe... there was a subtle balance between the two in the layout of each map and chapter.

Uncharted.

Games would be better without cover system, to be honest.

Then how would you avoid damage? Taking cover is vital in a lot of games.

Gears definitely. IMO, games with cover systems take example from Gears and how perfected it is. Rockstar games like GTA IV, RDR, and Max Payne 3 also have pretty decent cover systems.

I should also mention Splinter Cell: Conviction. When you're in the middle of a gun fight, cover is also one of your best friends in the game, unless you get flanked. Still, even when you are not flanked, has a good cover system to it.

Been playing Mass Effect 2 recently on insanity and I gotta say: cover is your friend in that mode, and I really like it.

Though, I gotta say...it's a little stupid that in order to get up onto a structure I have to get into cover first and then bolt up and onto the platform like I'm going over a regular wall.

I tend to agree with removing the auto-cover system in FPS games such as KZ2 and KZ3 because I want to be able to move away and fast at a moment's notice. My best way of avoiding damage is breaking the line of sight for the bad guy's weapon. If I'm crouched, I want to be able to move crouched instead of getting out of crouch first.

In my opinion, the cover system in the Mass Effect trilogy is meant to be gameplay at a slow to medium pace and Mass Effect 3 .gameplay is medium to fast. If you play different than those speeds, I can understand your annoyance.
