I am not necessarily asking which games had the best soundtrack or which games relied on music to make up for boring gameplay.

What I'm refering to are games that you simply cannot imagine without thier sountrack.

Example: I find it almost impossible to seperate OoT from its sountrack.

A couple of personal examples:

Shadow of the Colossus - the music style fit the atmosphere of the game perfectly. I especially liked that rewarding theme that would play when you revleal the colossus' weak spot.

Donkey Kong Country 2

Each and every game that has an original soundtrack. I haven't played one game yet where the music doesn't add to the experience, no matter if the soundtrack is good or not.

Halo. Well, more specifically, the franchise needs Marty O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori. Its soundtrack provides such a unique atmosphere to the games.

I agree with this actually. But above I just stated the ones that stood out the most.

I'd say mario and any rythme game obviously. Mario would just be kind of awkward if all you heard was jumping.

resident evil 4 comes to mind. so much of the pacing in that game relies on the music. enemies come out to cue a cacophony of music and sound effects to build the tension, the enemies are defeated, the music quickly fades away, and i take a deep breath. it works every time. some would rightfully say that a lot of tension is simply from being chased by mad villagers, but the music ties everything together and tells you exactly when it starts and exactly when it ends. in the sections without music, im constantly looking for enemies i might have missed. id get tired of the game without the music's steady hand.

Any Zelda or Mario or Metroid game. They just would not be as good without the music, and would be boring to listen to.

Shadow of the colossus without it's score just wouldn't be the same. I wouldn't feel the same way about it as I do.

Other games like Half life 2, would do perfect without it.

It's like movies. Sure most use them, but every once in awhile there will be one that doesn't. Example No country for old men. It went on to be one of the best of the decade.

Shadow of the Colossus.

Without it's music I probably wouldn't have ended up caring for it as much as I did.
