I will be getting a Gameboy Color soon so I want to know the best games on the system. They can either be for the original game boy or for the GBC.

Action/Adventure:
Beat-Em Up:
Platformers:
Puzzle:
Racing:
Shoot-Em Ups:
A few Gameboy color games you might wish to try Warlocked,X-MEN Volverrines Rage, Mission impossible, Cannon Fodder, Carmageddon.Driver,Rainbow six Planet of the apes,GEX Deep pocket Gerko.
Nintendo did really try with the gameboy color. Which had a very short lifespan compared to the original Black and white Gameboy. 1989-1998.
The Gameboy color only lasted 3 years 1998-2001 Seems that Nintendo and the third parties really tried to pack a lot of content in Gameboy color games.
As for the original Gameboy Super Mario land 1,2,3 are a must. As well as Metroid 2, Castlevania Adventure, Legend of Zelda, Nemesis, SolarStriker and the greatest pack in game of all time Tetris
I would recommend the Super Mario Land titles along with the Legend of Zelda game on the GameBoy.
Pokemon is also a great game to play as well.
Original Gameboy:
Super RC Pro-Am
Choplifter 2
Nintendo Tennis (Just called "Tennis")
Super Mario Land 1+2
GBA games have pretty crappy sound, esp. if you make the obvious comparison to the SNES but I think original GB games sound pretty good on a GBA. A GBA SP is how I play my GB/GBC games almost always (or the GBA player on GameCube).
In any case, there are lots of great GB/GBC games. Some of my favorites are the Mario/Wario Land games, which are different from each other but solid platformers all around. Donkey Kong for GB is maybe the best platformer on it though. It starts out w/ the original Donkey Kong levels and moves to these great puzzling platforming levels, very similar to Mario Vs. Donkey Kong on GBA if you've ever played that.
My very favorite games for it though are the three Zelda games. Oracle of Ages is my favorite Zelda game ever.
Super Mario Land
Super Mario Land 2 6 Golden Coins
Wario Land Super Mario Land 3
Kid Icarus Of Myths And Monsters
Kirby's Dream Land
Wario Land II
Legend of Zelda Link's Awakening DX
Legend of Zelda Oracle Of Ages
Legend of Zelda Oracle of Seasons
Pokemon Yelow
Pokemon Crystal
Super Mario Land
Super Mario Land 2 6 Golden Coins
Wario Land Super Mario Land 3
Kid Icarus Of Myths And Monsters
Kirby's Dream Land
Wario Land II
Legend of Zelda Link's Awakening DX
Legend of Zelda Oracle Of Ages
Legend of Zelda Oracle of Seasons
Pokemon Yelow
Pokemon Crystal
BigBen11111
I'd like to add
FF Legend III
Wario Land III
Spider-Man 2
Tomb Raider Curse of the Sword
The Simpsons Living Treehouse of Horror
The Wario Land series. I, II and III. I can't stress it enough, they're the purest form of handheld platforming fun and all blow both Mario Lands out of the water. Also, SMB Deluxe is probably the best SMB version you can get. Nude_DudeI'll second those as I forgot them in my list, I did like Mario Land 2 though. Deluxe is worth it just for the Boo race mode.
Bionic Commando: Elite ForcesEikichi-Onizuka
There's a strange quirk about this game that I wanted to point out:
I have a copy of it and it kept glitching and freezing up on me. So I researched this problem online to see if I was the only one, and my research turned up that it's a fault in all copies of Bionic Commando: Elite Forces.
The problem being that if you save the game, turn off the Game Boy, and come back to it later, it causes that glitch. It was poor quality control from a company that Capcom outsourced the production of the cartridge to. The solution to the problem being that you have to sit down and play it in one sitting or leave you Game Boy on until you come back to it (just like the old NES Bionic Commando).
Great game, though.

Ah, forgot about that but now that you mention I think my copy did do that, It's a short game at least(as most GBC games that aren't RPGs). But yeah, anyone who can't devote a couple hours in one sitting might just want to play it elsewhere and use save states.

Btw forgot Zelda essentials; Oracle of Seasons / Ages, Link's Awakening.
