I'm going to have to go with the N64 and Gamecube Zelda games. While the story-telling in Zelda games are generally less explicite and intricate compared to, say, the Final Fantasy games, I felt more intimately drawn into the world in all four games. The visuals, music, narrative, gameplay, and characters all come together so cohesively and impressively in those games. I found myself inserting thoughts and feelings, filling in the unexpressed gaps in the narrative... I don't know really how to explain it... those four Zeldas just did things right.

Grim Fandango was developed for Windows 98. Show of hands for those running Windows 98 for purposes OTHER than classic gaming? If your logic were applicable, the Apple II isn't a legacy platform either. I guess I'll just go do the day to day, you know, a little bit of disk-based operating system work, maybe I'll try out that killer app Telnet. Hahaha. While you may be Mr. Aware, I am Mr. Astute. Ho! I think most of the games I've listed have great storylines, except maybe Tales of the Abyss. XD Even though I didn't add them on my list, I think Siren and Silent Hill 1 & 2 have great storylines, ....the former being my favorite.

Personally, my favorite has to be Moon: Remix RPG Adventure, because you won't find a game with an storyline like the one in that game anywhere else.

In terms of purely engrossing story I would have to say Tales of Symphonia, Final Fantasy IV and VII.

I haven't played through Final Fantasy VI but I hear that has an amazing story as well.
