Mario64. The game is great in every respect. The visuals are unbelievable. It is amazing what those artists did with the hardware, on deciding character design. The music is absolutely astonishing. It isn't live like the Galaxy series, but imo that sort of keeps it grounded--if that makes sense.

Then I have to mention Blast Corps, as the platforming aspects of that game are probably the most difficult of that entire generation.

yes, thats pretty much its strongpoint, well , that and racing games (not always the best versions of those racing games, but good nonetheless)

Well as Darkman said, if we can consider Tomb Raider a platformer then I go with those. If not, Ape Escape.

Maybe Crash Bandicoot: Warped or Sonic Adventure. Blasto and Tomba also seemed decent.

Gotta say Spyro Year of the Dragon...Spent wayyyyy too much time getting 100% on that game :P

Second best though would be Ape Escape...both games had nice controls and crazy worlds to explore.

Rayman 2 for sure, but not the crappy PS1 version, I played the full and complete N64 version. I was soooo disappointed to find out after downloading Rayman 2 on PSN that it was a horribly butchered and cut version of the game I loved.

PS2 version had more content, but the DC version let you run the game in VGA mode, while I don't think the PS2 version had progressive Scan (which doesn't look as good anyways)

Banjo Kazooie, Mischief Makers, DK64, and Rayman 2

Also Banjo Tooie and Conker BFD, even though they came out early 2000s.

not on PS2 it doesn't, but hey to each his own

reason being is that using progressive scan on PS2 tends to emphasize the jagging problem almost all PS2 games suffer from , 480p makes it very noticable, with some games more than others.

I'd definately recommend picking up a N64, great game library... though a bunch of the best games are pretty pricey nowadays

Crash Bandicoot for me. It was fantastic. It felt like a challenging 2D platformer in the same vein as Donkey Kong Country, the Sonic series, or the Mario series. I loved the challenging and addicting gameplay, and (for the time) bright and vivid graphics. I feel it and Pac-Man World were the last of this breed of platformers. Once Super Mario 64 hit, most 3D platformers became open, wide collect-a-thons rather than tight, challenging platforming.

good choice there my friend ;) it sickens me at the sight of what crash bandicoot has now become, the original 3 + CTR are amazing though

The xbox version of conker is pretty great, graphically looks really good (even by todays standards), it also has better controls than the 64 version, the only drawback is that the dialog is heavily censored over the N64 version. I should probably build up my gamecube collection again sometime, gave my cube away years ago to my cousin when i got my original xbox :?

The one I played the most was Banjo-Kazooie. I was the only kid I knew who owned a N64 with more 3rd party games than first party games. I owned Glover, Banjo-Kazooie, Rush 2, Nascar '99, In the Zone '98, Mario Kart 64, and Diddy Kong Racing.

I LOVED Banjo-Kazooie when I was a kid. Got every note, found every secret, explored every crack in the game. I found so many glitches just from jumping around it's not even funny, and to this day, I've still only beaten the game once.

The upscaling of graphics is really nice, and there is some added content. Both are good. I have the Xbox version.

:)
