When it comes to old-school FPS, people generally list Doom and Duke Nukem 3D as the best of the best. Sure there are Wolfenstein 3D, Rise of the Triad, Blood and Quake, but I think Doom and Duke are the ones that really represent the genre in the mid-nineties.

So, which one do you like better and why?

After much pondering, I say Doom: despite the repetitive action it's simply perfect and I never get tired of it. The mosters are awesome, especially in Doom 2 and every weapon packs a huge punch and is recommended for a certain situation. A skilled player can exactly calculate how many shots it will take to clear a room full of monsters, since the game is so precise, almost mathematical.

I love both, but I love Doom better and I still play it like crazy

He posed a simple question, Doom or Duke 3D? Goldeneye 007 isn't listed in his post as far as I can see... For me I'd have to go with Doom. Doom is a timeless classic and for whatever reason I find myself playing through Doom once just about every year.

Doom for sure. They did everything right with Doom (speaking of the PC original of course). After all, even Duke 3D is a "Doom clone" :P

both are excellent games, hard to decide, it really depends what you play it on too.

DOOM, by far. Duke Nukem is a very fun game with a great sense of humor. But Doom is just so much fun. So much run-n-gun, old-school FPS action packed into that beast.

You are very right sure; Goldeneye was way better than either of those games, as well a 98% of FPS games released.

Between the two, I am going to have to go with Doom because I've enjoyed way more doom titles than Duke titles.

"DOOM". But I worship iD Software. I have "DOOM" on... let's see... six different systems? At Least?

PC, GBA, Genesis 32x, N64, PS1, Xbox... I have a hardcover edition of "Masters of Doom"... Yep. Carmack & Romero are Gods. The Duke is, in his own mind. I liked the Duke when it came out originally but only "DOOM" has aged well, in my opinion.

Doom was the best game on the PC for a LONG time if you ask me. Duke was fun, and broke some ground, but the environments just didnt feel as good. Doom has great music too.

Doom, easily. I don't see what people found so lovable about duke, it's alright and stuff but.......the badass attitude of Duke wears off quick and it's been done better by other people before.

Doom, though that stuff is groovy.

Doom without a doubt, I've played both and I feel Doom is more memorable. Duke Nukem is remembered mostly for its protagonist and humor. Doom was all about its environments and spot on gameplay.

I also think it depends on which platform?I have Duke 3D for the Saturn and Doom for the 32X, and I actually like Doom better.

I think that I'd have to say Doom is probably the superior game as far as a serious game, but I think I might've had even more fun playing Duke Nukem. Not exactly sure, but I see Doom as more of a... Nonstop fun I guess.

I played Doom for a while... it was OK for my tastes. I however prefer playing Descent II over Doom or Duke anyday.

Doom for me, but Duke 3D is still surprisingly playable. I played through it on my notebook just recently.

Well let's balance the two out. Doom has a great evil, twisted theme going for it with creepy dark corners, lava and creatures from Hell itself with some great music and hours of play. Duke Nukem 3D has heaps of movie references (and some from one of my favorites of all time, Evil Dead), babes, a huge steroid-run badass with rediculous weaponry, a great sense of humor, aliens, babes, pipe bombs, babes, a weapon that shrinks enemies and lets you squish them like bugs, babes.. Did I mention.. babes? Haha, but really, they're both excellent games and it's very hard for me to pick between the two. I want to say Doom but Duke Nukem 3D has always pulled me in its direction just a little more. So I'm going to go with The Duke.

I find myself constantly going back to Doom II, trying to beat every level on Nightmare. I rarely play DN3D anymore...still a great game but it just doesn't call to me like the Doom games do.

Good GAWD!!! I forgot to count that!!! I have it too. Wow, I thought I was the only one. And for what it was, I liked it a lot. But then I s'pose Carmack could grunt one out onto a Ritz cracker and I would buy it.

:P

I got pretty far into it as well. It got me through a terrible afternoon at the DMV once, I recall. People around me were looking over my shoulder, I guess they had not seen a game on a phone before... They were more rare in those days. "Angry Birds" hadn't sucked in people like my 77 year-old mother yet.

Doom II is one of the most bad a$$ games of all time, love it one of my favorite games of all time.

Heritic was a good game too but its no Doom
