Super Mario RPG is highly overrated. It's a good game, but it was very basic at the core. My vote goes to Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door.famicommander

Super Mario RPG was one of the best games for the SNES. It had really good graphics for the time, an awesome story, creative enemies, cool weapons and items, and it had a nice challenge.
Although I have to agree with you- PM:TTYD was a really awesome game. It was way better than the one for N64 and Super Paper Mario for Wii...

This is one of the worst Video game name-butcherings i've ever seen.
While Superstar Saga had interesting mechanics (what with the dual-button system,) and Paper Mario had its share of features as well, I still think the best RPG with Mario would be Legend of the Seven Stars; with Square's support, Nintendo made an excellent beginner's RPG that helped introduce a lot of people to the genre, and also had features that would keep RPG experts entertained.
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. That game was incredible. Great Graphics and art design. Great story with hilarious dialogue. The gameplay was accesible yet deep. It's probably my 2nd Favorite Gamecube game beating Windwaker by a mile.
You posted this as if there is a long series of RPG's with Mario in it. Super Mario RPG, and a couple of Paper Mario games(3 I think) is all there are. They're all pretty much the same game as well.
Can I say that I enjoyed them all more or less? Super Mario RPG was my second RPG game (EB was my first...I've since played countless), so it will always hold a special place in my heart.
My favorite, if I had to pick, would be Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga. I can't really put my finger on why, but the whole package was just enjoyable from the beginning to the end. Plus, it marked the return of the Koopa Kids, and they are hardcore.
Out of what I have played, Super Mario RPG, Paper Mario, and Superstar Saga, I'm going to go with Superstar Saga. I really liked how the game worked out, really. I liked the way how puzzles and battles were taken care of through the cooperation of Mario and Luigi. All of the Mario RPG games that I played were fun, but I especially enjoyed Superstar Saga!

I have to disagree that Super Paper Mario is overrated, I thought that game was wicked but I do agree that Paper Mario:The Thousand Year Door is also a very good game.
Both Mario and Luigi games (Superstar Saga and Partners in Time) were really fun, but I can't say they were the best Mario RPG games. That would have to go to super mario rpg.
Super Mario 64 isn't an RPG (I know I'm not the first to say it), but that game rocked.
Paper Mario and the thousand year door was not only a great rpg with mario in it. The game was a very well put together rpg all together. The interesting look, the NPC's, and the gameplay was fun and innovative.
