Poll Best of the original 3 Resident Evil's (23 votes)

Resident Evil 1 35%
Resident Evil 2 52%
Resident Evil 3 13%

Currently having a Resident Evil marathon, finished all the new ones, going through the originals, finished 1 and finished 2 (A/B), about the start on Nemesis.

Of the original three games, which one do you prefer?

Resident Evil 2. The whole 'zapping' feature really added a lot of replay to the game. I'd love for them to make an HD remake for it like they did with the first game.

I've always favored Resident Evil 3 over the previous two. Mostly because it takes place in the actually city and you get to see how much it went downhill So it has more varied locations, got some rather good puzzles ( I might be the only one that liked the water puzzle), and while being a tiny bit more action focused then the previous two..The Nemesis makes up for it when your heart rate go up after you enter an area, that music starts and you hear the gutteral voice saying "staaars..." accompanied by heavy rapid footsteps by a danger outside of the camera coming for you.

RE2 hands down. The whole A/B scenario with different characters made it quite replayable.

Also Veronica was of the same era and should probably be on this list.

Resident Evil 1, the mansion is my favourite setting of all the games, I wanted to explore that more than the locations in two and three

While 2 is my favourite, 3 is easily the best game of the 3 imo.

Not inclduing remake or Veronica, purely taking into account these three main entries.

The first! That game is amazing. Too many people favor the remake, and if you're much younger than myself I can understand why. But the first three and Code Veronica are the truest RE experiences.

Can't say about 1 because i never played it , so RE2 is the best because of the 2 points of view in the story

RE3 is good to but i never got knee deep in it

I found them scary as a kid, in retrospect, the games in general aren't that scary. By today's standards they come across as comical in certain area's. Which is fine, it's basically a B-movie with comic book heroes.

Revelations are very good games imo. The first game, with Infernal mode, has the player running around very tight corridors with nowhere near enough ammo to take enemies on, it's very much like the opening of Resident Evil 2 on hard mode.

Revelations 2 has some good sequences as well, such as a creature only your child side-kick can see, that can inst-kill you if they get too close. While these are easily dispatched in the general enviroment, due to moving slow, they pop up in battle and timer related sequence as well making them very annoying and difficult to kill.

The remake of the original RE on the GC.

However, you should have included Code Veronica X as well as it was part of the group, and IMO the best one.

Edit: ok I see it was a conscious decision not to include Code Veronica.

I would like to add, there isn't a RE game that I don't like. However, as a series the games have become really weak as most fans can agree, especially the main series, which is where it counts.

RE games I love!

  • RE1
  • RE2
  • RE3
  • Code Veronica
  • RE4
  • REmake
  • Revelations

RE games I like...

  • RE Zero
  • Survivor
  • Outbreak
  • Outbreak 2
  • Dead Aim
  • Darkside Chronicles
  • Revelations 2
  • Operation Raccoon City

RE games that bummed me out...

  • RE5
  • RE6
  • Umbrella Chronicles

Read above. Three main entries, not the remake, not Veronica.

Not getting much of love for 3 either, the Nemesis character chasing you is great, much better implemented than Mr X, in which you could just run out the room and that would be that, but so far it lacks any puzzles or build up outside of Nemesis.

Nemesis probably has the best written dialogue in the history of Capcom games.

I have to agree with you on this. I also do agree with someone else who stated that Resident Evil 3 was better because it actually allowed you to explore more of the city. I personally liked the story line in RE2 due to it being more detailed and allowing you the ability to play it from two different perspectives.

Resident Evil 1/2's environments tended to have a purpose, be it a secret, a puzzle or enemy encounter. Much of Resident Evil 3 environments don't have anything in them.

The changing narrative is interesting though, I noticed when I went an alternate route, I met Carlos in a different location with a different Nemesis encounter. The pop up pause of "do you want to", just saps all the tension away though.

The Nemesis creature as well is getting somewhat redundant. It's basically a character slasher movie, with slight alterations to the encounter, but not enough to differentiate it. Not quite finished replaying it, but after the third encounter, it starts to get boring. All in all the game has more than half a dozen.

Doesn't seem to be much in the way of story-telling either. The plotline so far is basically "get out of city", and not much else. Resident Evil 1/2, as well as Revelations 1/2 feed little bits of interesting information. Resident Evil 2 lays the plotlines almost from the get go (Mr X/William Birkin) developing onward with Sherry and Ada.

Strange disconnects as well, one moment you are at the top of the bell tower, then it jumps to a cut-scene with you below and outside the bell tower.

Feels like it might have been a rushed game. It recycles assets as well.

I'm not hating it, it's still decent, but I'd say Revelations 1/2 are much better, let alone Resident Evil 1/2.

Re1 had the best setting for my tastes. 2 was amazing and is also a classic, but RE1 takes it just because of the mansion setting. It's a tough call between the two of them though. 3 just didn't feel right to me. Nemesis is cool and all, but the game just felt empty or something. I wasn't feeling the charisma on that one.

Resident Evil 2 is the scariest. But my heart always will lie in RE1.
