Bad endings in games are unavoidable but how much bad can it really do? It does suck, but for you does it ruin the whole game? Is the ending supposed to be that powerful?

A bad ending is a powerful thing becouse even of the game was amazing a bad ending leaves a lasting negative impression. Examples: Halo 2 a great game that had a disasterous ending, Mirrors Edge a great and innovative game that had the most nonesensical non ending ever...actually most games have bad endings. Prince of Persia one of the better games in recent times had a pretty bad ending. Hm so many bad ones I cant think of a good one=p

True that, although I never like PoP anyway, the only bad ending that had a lasting effect was RE5 because I expected more, other than that I accept it, never played Halo 2 though so I wouldn't know about that.

Just as the beginning of a game sets the mood for the rest of the experience, I think that the ending mostly serves to determine how we will remember our adventures. I had a blast with Fable 2 and did every side quest, mission, and job in the game, but my memory of the experience is somewhat diminished, simply because the ending was nonexistent.

Eheh, oh yeah. I have to say most of them too. I still remember Sweet Tooth's Twisted Metal: Small Brawl Ending, that was hilarious!

Sad endings are very powerful if you get attached to the characters over the course of the game. Unfortunately, developers rarely choose to go that way.

Good endings - and I mean ACTUAL endings that conclude the story - are fine as well, however "happy endings are just stories that haven't finished yet." I don`t know where I heard it, but I feel that`s more true to life than "they lived happily ever after."

As for cliffhangers... They just have to die, no exceptions.
