Halo 1, obviously.
Which, however, is nothing really special, considering that game only really deserves a 7/10.
Anyone who says Halo Zero is an idiot. It's not even an official game.
Anyway, I guess I'd go with Combat Evolved. Speciffically the PC version. But all three were excelent.

'Fraid I'm gonna have to go with you on the HZ one. I didn't enjoy it much myself.
Man, i was so bummed out when I realized they didn't include that level. For me, yeah, the first one. I always put them on a scale as halo1 the best, halo3 the second best, and halo2 the absolute worst although it wasn't that bad.Halo 2
the only things that game had missing was online co-op and the demo level from the E3 04 trailer
the campaign could've been much longer too but it was good and provided me with too much fun

I didn't like Halo 3 for some reason, and I thought CE was alright,
Halo 2 was amazing in my opinion.

indeed I'll NEVER forgive for that it looked so damn good
Combat Evolved is one of the greatest shooters ever made, in my opinion. I actually started playing it again today. It still holds up, and it's fantastic.Bentham
All 3 of them are very relevant even today (well that's kind of obvious when it comes to 3). The games have aged much better than say Goldeneye.

Agreed....they've aged so much better than Goldeneye...especially Halo 3, which is ancient havingly come out all the way back to last fall! And man, even Halo 1, it's amazing how well a dusty old Xbox game has aged compared to a bright and spanky new N64 game.
I'd have to say the first one was my favorite, though i've yet to play the third one. It was the first game I ever played on the xbox back in the day, and completley changed the way I looked at first person shooters, and just how badass they could actually be.
For one, it got away from the all-too-familiar WW2 background, and breathed a bit of fresh air into the genre. The weapons were badass, and had one hell of a punch, (especially my beloved pistol
It's hard to say really. Halo CE had a much bigger impact when it first hit. The cooperative gameplay was so addictive that it was easy to overlook the copy and paste level design, and while there was no Live multiplayer at the time, I sunk in a lot of time with system link games at my college. There were some balance issues, no way of communicating, but it was pretty damn fun.
Still, my vote is going to go to Halo 3. The campaign is brief, but a lot of fun. The inclusion of 4-player online co-op gave the game a lot of extra mileage and the skulls managed to tweak the experience. The replay feature was a great new addition to the series, making all those cool, funny, "you had to see this" instantly available. I've spent many hours on Theater mode alone. Add in an addicting multiplayer (hey, it's got me playing even a year after its release), Bungie's continued support for the game, map tweaks and playlist changes... well, to some people this might be too much of the same thing, but I find it superbly refined experience. I look foreword to the new maps next year and Halo 3: Recon.
