Not only one of the best RPG's ever created, but one of the greatest stories ever told!

User Rating: 10 | Final Fantasy VI Advance GBA
I am a fan of Steampunk. A BIG fan. Don't ask me why, I just do. However, I think the reason why I like this genre is because it blends genres like sci-fi and fantasy into a perfect, harmonious mixture. As I consider Final Fantasy VI to be a Steampunk-related game, it is by no means an exception to this rule; it has deep characters, an epic struggle, and sci-fi vehicles and fantastical settings; everything to promise a masterful work of art. And masterful, it is. Here's my full explanation:

STORY: Final Fantasy VI's story is every bit as epic and memorable as the greatest novels written in our time. While it may seem unoriginal at first (The age-old Good vs. Evil script), you'll soon realize just how deep the plot really goes. Because it's not just the main external plot that you get exposed to- it's the characters' internal struggles that you get to witness as well. From the brave, protective, and confused heroine Terra to the flirting, masculine king of Figaro, Edgar, to the mysterious assassin Shadow, each and every character has their own personal life story to be told. Every character has so much life and humanity put into them that you really can't hold back any tears when some highly emotional event happens in the game, like Celes' attempted suicide or Cyan reuniting with his late family, and luckily that happens quite often in the long, 40+ hour long story. And the fact that all of these 14 playable character's fates are closely tied by one, epic battle with the psychotic Kefka, just makes you want to see this story to the end. And luckily, the end is one of the greatest endings in an RPG, and adds a great deal of personality to each character. 10/10

GAMEPLAY: The gameplay is of your typical Final Fantasy game; Navigate an overworld, look for towns or dungeons that move the story forward, and fight in random encounter battles. Battles are fought using an ATB gauge, and once it fills up, your characters are able to take action. The usual, right? But what makes the gameplay different from other Final Fantasies? For one thing, each character has a special ability (i.e. Edgar's Tool command which lets him use special weapons like chainsaws), which are always unique to a single character, and every character can equip espers to learn more magic and gain stat boosts. Plus, battles are usually fast-paced, which makes random encounters slightly less tedious than they could be. Finally, the difficulty is actually quite perfect. There really isn't a need to grind in the game, as just going through the main game should keep you at a sufficient level. Normally a game is killed by such a high difficulty, but luckily this game remains fair throughout the playthrough. 10/10

GRAPHICS: Saying the graphics in this game are beautiful would be an understatement. These are without a doubt the best graphics seen on a 16-bit system. Every town you come across is full of life and no two towns ever look completely the same. Each enemy looks spectacular, and even though they don't animate, that's perfectly fine because they re just so stunning to look at. The mode-7 effects are breathtaking, as well, from flying a speedy airship in not two but three dimensions to riding a chocobo on a flat overworld. You would be hard pressed to see greater graphical quality than this. 10/10

MUSIC/SOUND: Though all Final Fantasy games have memorable soundtracks, this one stands out the most because of how they relate to the deep characters in the story. Each track is not only unique but offers up some sort of mood that fits in perfectly with the scenario. 10/10

Final Fantasy VI has been successfully lodged in players' memories as one of the greatest RPG's ever to be released, though unfortunately it has been largely overshadowed by more recent games in the series like FFVII and FFVIII. So do yourself a favor, delve into this amazing and epic journey through Terra's world, and once you are done you will have created one of the finest and fondest memories in your gaming life.
