Punch-Out Walkthrough

Become the king of the ring with our complete Punch-Out walkthrough!

Comments

Like a retired boxer making his triumphed return, Punch-Out's back after a nearly two-decade hiatus to prove who's king of the ring. The gameplay's as true to the NES classic as ever: part puzzler, part rhythm game, and all action. And yet, there are still a few surprises in-store for long-time fans, including the addition of an entirely new boxer, Disco Kid. For those new to the series, or those looking to refine their boxing technique, as your coach, we'll try our best to take you from chump to champ.

Here's what you'll find in GameSpot's Punch-Out!! Game Guide:

  • Training: Our training session will turn you from Little Mac into a Big Mac…or something like that.
  • Walkthrough: Your competition is fierce, tough, and borderline illegal. Get the scoop on how to defeat every one of this game's boxers with our in-depth walkthrough.

Training

If you're new to the Punch-Out series, you probably haven't played a sports game quite like this. Punch-Out is all about patter-recognition and timing--that is, you need to learn how to evade or counter your opponent's moves, and then follow-up with a beating. It's both easier and harder than it sounds.

Basic Controls

There's really only six moves in Punch-Out, but each serves a very different role. Here's a quick rundown:

  • Hook: A punch that targets the chest.
  • Jab: A punch that targets the head.
  • Dodge: Avoid attacks by leaning either left or right.
  • Block: Blocking allows you to protect yourself against some attacks. However, it's rarely necessary, and you're generally better off using dodges instead.
  • Duck: Ducking allows you to evade certain attacks that a Dodge can't, such as Super Macho Man's spin attacks. You won't have to use it too often however.
  • Star-Punch: Anytime you earn a star (or more), you can unleash a power Star-Punch. The more stars you have, the more powerful the attack! But be careful, as you'll lose any and all your Stars if you get hit!
Hooks & Jabs Remember, a hook is a low-punch (to the chest), a jab is a high-punch (to the head). It's important you remember these two terms as we refer to both frequently.

Boxing Basics

There are two ways to win in Punch-Out: Score a TKO (knock out your opponent until he doesn't get back up) or win by decision (that is, if time expires before either boxer scores a TKO, the ref will then decide the victor based on performance). Either way, you're going to have to inflict some damage upon your opponent in order to win. Now each opponent has their own set of moves, meaning each battle's a learning experience. You need to watch carefully for each boxers' tell that precedes each move, then respond quickly to avoid being hit.

For any given move, there are usually several ways you can respond. You can dodge the attack, block the attack, or counter the attack. Now with the exception of blocking, each move lasts about a second--for instance, if you press down to duck, you'll only duck for about a second before returning to your standing stance. There is no way to continually duck or dodge, and as such, sharp timing is required. In general, dodging the attack is the safest and easiest option, and it almost always leaves your opponent vulnerable afterward, allowing you to get in some punches of your own! Blocking is rarely effective, and is generally best avoided (except in a few cases, which we'll point out). Now countering is where things get interesting: Many (but not all!) of your opponents attacks can be countered--that is, if you punch them at just the right moment during their attack, it'll stop them in their tracks and leave them vulnerable. Even better, if you time it just right, you'll often be awarded a Star!

"What are Stars?" we hear you asking. Stars allow you to unleash a super-powerful attack known as the "Star Punch"--the more Stars you have, the more powerful the punch (3 Stars is the maximum). However, if you take any damage at all, you'll lose all of the Stars you've earned! As such, you have to carefully balance when and where you use them. If you're having trouble retaining them, it's best to unleash the Star Punch ASAP; however, if you're apt at evading (or countering) your opponent, it's generally best to save up until you have 3-Stars, then unleash your Star Punch to remove most--if not all-- if your opponent's health!

So when should you unleash your Star Punch? It's generally best to use them while your opponent's stunned. That is, once you're ready to unleash the punch, evade your opponent's next attack, then immediately either jab or hook them to stun them. You can now unleash your Star Punch without fear of it being dodged or countered, though you may want to get in a few normal-punches first.

Special Tips!

  • Health Boost! After knocking an opponent down, shake the Wiimote and Nunchuck or hammer on the 1+2 buttons simultaneously(depending on control scheme) as fast as you can to slowly regain energy before they get back up!
  • Recover Health Before Rounds 2 or 3:Between rounds, when Doc gives you advice, press the - (minus) button to have Doc eat a candy bar, which will refill most of your life before the next round. You can only do this once per match, so save it for a round when you're low on energy.
  • Extra Life! If you're in the process of being TKO'd (during the animation just before Little Mac falls to the ground), immediately shake the Wiimote and Nunchuck or hammer on the 1+2 buttons (depending on control scheme) to have a chance at coming back one last time with a slight bit of health.

Glass Joe

Quick Tips

  • Glass Joe opens every round with his "ah-ha" taunt, giving you a perfect opportunity to earn an easy star! Punch him at anytime during this animation for a star.
  • Both of Glass Joe's attacks can yield stars, as long as you punch him at any time as he prepares his attack with whatever fist is closest to him. If you have trouble with the timing, simply dodge to either side instead.
  • Go for the One-Punch-Knockdown! Glass Joe backs away and taunts you, get ready to punch him (either hook or jab is fine) with either fist as he steps back toward the center. This will knock him to the ground, regardless of how much health he has!

Walkthrough

Get this: Glass Joe won't even attempt to attack you until after he's backed away and taunted you. As such, the very beginning of Round 1 is an ideal time to pummel him with a series of punches. Start off with some Jabs to the head until he starts blocking, then follow-up with three hooks to the chest, at which point he'll lower his gloves to block those instead. Now alternate between jabs (head) and hooks (chest) every three punches to continually attack him, without being blocked (as he switches his blocking position after every three hits).

After a few moments, Glass Joe will back away and taunt you. If you're quick, punch him as he steps back toward the center for a One-Hit Knockout (but don't sweat it if you miss)! Either way, Glass Joe will finally start start attacking, though he only has two moves. The easiest way to deal with him now is to avoid dodging and instead counter his attacks with your fists (earning you a star each time!). His two attacks consist of:

1) A punch from the left (when he crouches down) and…
2) A punch from the right, where he takes a quick-step back beforehand

Counter either move with a punch from whichever fist is closer to him (that is, if he's punching from the left, greet him with a left punch, and visa-versa) to earn a star each time. Depending on your skill level, you may want to unleash the Star Punch as soon as you earn them (which is easier), or save it until you've earned 3-Stars (which is slightly tougher, but more powerful). Feel free to unleash your Star Punch at anytime, except when he has backed away for his taunt, as Glass Joe is incapable of blocking them.

If you're having trouble earning stars, try this: Instead of countering his attacks with punches, evade them with a dodge to either the left or right instead (it doesn't matter which way you dodge)--once you have, immediately follow-up with a series of either hooks or jabs to stun him and subsequently pummel him. Repeat this to end the battle victorious.

Star Opportunities

  • Glass Joe periodically will taunt you by placing one arm behind his back and yelling "ah-ha"--land a punch on him anytime during this animation for a star.
  • Glass Joe can yield a star during either of his two attacks. Simply hit him with the fist that's closest to him as he prepares his attack.

One-Punch-Knockdown

  • After Glass Joe backs away and taunts you, get ready to punch him (either hook or jab is fine) with either fist as he steps back toward the center. You must land the hit as he's in the process of stepping forward.

Challenges

Knock Glass Joe down 3 times and let him win…by decision!

Here's the thing: You need to knock Glass Joe down three times, without TKO'ing him (meaning no more than 2 KO's per round), and while letting him win…by knocking you out 3 times as well. Knock him down quickly twice in round 1 (use the "One-Punch-Knockout" for the first one, then counter his moves for three stars and lay him down with a Star Punch) then let him attack you for two knockdowns himself (don't dodge or block his attacks!--there should be just enough time for him to tie it up at two knockdowns each. During Round 2, knock him down once more (either using Stars or the One-Punch-Knockdown)--you've now met the requirement of 3 knockdowns, so stop attacking! Let Joe knock you down once more during Round 2, to tie you up again at 3-Knockdowns! Good--now dodge the rest of his attacks through the remainder of Round 2, and all of Round 3, until time expires (neither of you should score any more knockdowns!). Once time's up, the ref should declare Joe the winner!

Here's what you do: Use the One-Punch-Knockdown whenever Joe taunts you, and counter his other attacks to prevent it from landing. Just make sure not to dodge, duck, or block!

Von Kaiser

Quick Tips

  • Use a Star Punch while Kaiser's stunned for an instant KO, regardless of how much health he has.
  • Every one of Kaiser's moves (both attacks and his one taunt) can yield a star. So instead of dodging them, counter them for some easy stars (check the "Star Opportunities" list below for specifics).

Walkthrough

Although Von Kaiser doesn't have a One-Punch-Knockdown like Glass Joe, he has the next best thing: a One-Star-Punch-Knockout! Here's how it works: After earning a star (or more, but you only need one!), dodge Kaiser's next move, them immediately follow-up with a punch to stun him. Now unleash your Star Punch to instantly KO him, regardless of how much health he has! Repeat as necessary for a super-easy take down! To earn the stars, simply punch him just as he settles into either of his attack positions--check the "Star Opportunities" below for more.

If you're having trouble earning or using star punches, simple dodge Kaiser's attacks as he flashes red (dodging to either the left or right will evade both of his attacks, but avoid ducking or blocking, as they only guard against one each), then immediately follow-up with either a series of jabs or hooks to inflict some damage. Repeat this pattern to handily trump Kaiser.

Star Opportunities

  • When Kaiser pulls back and makes the ticking noise, land a right punch just after his last "tick" for a star.
  • If Kaiser covers his face while shaking his gloves, get ready to jab him with either fist as soon as he uncovers his face and says "Mommy."
  • When Kaiser crouches to the left in preparation of a punch, punch him shortly after he makes the "reloading" sound of a gun--just as he flashes red.

One-Punch-Knockdown

  • Star Punch Kaiser (only one star is necessary) while he's stunned for an instant KO!

Disco Kid

Quick Tips

  • Disco Kid opens every round with a star-yielding pose--give him a jab just as he strikes his post (when he flashes gold) for an easy star!
  • The right-dodge is the only one that can evade both of Kid's attacks, so if you're focusing on dodging (instead of countering), make it the right-dodge. Oh, ducking works too.

Walkthrough

No Caption Provided

Disco Kid, like the others before him, only has two moves. However, he also has a pair of poses he may strike, which makes the fight seem more complicated than it really is (if only because his "tells" can throw you off). You can tell he's about to attack when he moves to either the left or right side--each move has a generous build-up, giving you plenty of time to identify it. Now there are two ways to deal his attacks: Dodging or Countering. Dodging is easiest, and makes hum vulnerable to punches afterward. However, you can also counter them with punches (when he flashes red) to earn stars, but the timing is much more difficult, so if you're still a beginner, we strongly suggest dodging instead. To evade his moves, simply dodge to the right the moment he flashes red (even dodging a bit before is fine too), then immediately follow-up with a series of punches.

As mentioned, Disco Kid also periodically strikes a pose, of which he has two. He always opens a round with one, giving you an easy opportunity to earn a star by striking him the moment he flashes gold. Once you've accrued a star, perform a Star Punch when Disco Kid's stunned (by punching him after dodging an attack) for an instant KO! Do this whenever you collect a star for a super-easy victory.

Star Opportunities

  • Disco Kid loves to strike a pose every now and then--jab him just as he strikes it (when he flashes gold).
  • Disco Kid will sometimes take a breather and flash a grin--jab him as soon as you see (or hear) his shining grin.
  • When Disco Kid prepares to attack from the left, punch him the very moment you see him flash red (the timing's tricky).
  • If Disco Kid backs away to the right, punch him the very moment you see him flash red (the timing's tricky).

One-Punch-Knockdown

Unleash a Star Punch (only one star's necessary) during either of Disco Kid's taunts for an instant KO! The timing is the same as if you were going for a star (that is, when he flashes gold for the first pose, or flashes his grin during the second).

Challenges

Land a Three-Star Punch and win the fight!
Just as it sounds, gather three stars and unleash them all at once in a Star Punch! Consult our "Star Opportunities" list above to find out how to get stars.

TKO Disco Kid throwing only 6 punches!

The trick is to use Star Punches to score three consecutive One-Punch-Knockdowns, all within a single round! To perform a One-Punch-Knockdown, simply earn a Star (either by jabbing him during a taunt or countering his moves with proper timing) then unleash it during any of his taunts (the timing is the same as if you were going for a star--that is, when he flashes gold for the first pose, or flashes his grin during the second).

If you're not good at earning Stars by countering his moves, don't sweat it! Disco Kid taunts a lot, giving you plenty of oppurtunities to both earn and use Star Punches during those moments--simply dodge every attack between.

King Hippo

Quick Tips

  • Every one of King Hippo's attacks can be avoided by ducking--so keep this in mind for quick-evasive action.
  • After dodging either of Hippo's punch attacks (but not the two-fisted slam), he's always left vulnerable--follow up with a quick-jab his noggin, then hook his exposed chest repeatedly.
  • After knocking off Hippo's crown, punch him in the same manner again for an instant KO! (see "One-Punch-Knockdown" below for more)

Walkthrough

No Caption Provided
No Caption Provided

King Hippo is undeniably the hardest opponent you've faced yet. Unlike the others, he'll actually block most of your attacks, and seemingly rarely leaves himself vulnerable. Thankfully, the taped "X" that covers his bellybutton is also a massive weak-spot, capable of taking him down in two hits. However, you have some work to do before he leaves that vulnerable to attack.

When the match begins, Hippo only has two types of attacks: A quick punch, and a claw-swipe. Both of them can be evaded with a duck or dodge in any direction, though ducking is preferred, as this is the only evasive move that can also dodge his third attack, coming later. For the quick-jab, you should dodge the moment the "clicking" sound stops. However, you can also block it for a star opportunity--after blocking, immediately counter with a hook to his bellybutton (you should punch with the same fist that King Hippo uses--that is, if he punched with his right fist, counter with your right). You can unleash the Star Attack at any time, so long as he hasn't backed away. As for Hippo's second attack, the claw-swipe, wait until after the "rumble" and dodge just after he raises his glove in preparation of attacking. After dodging either attack, follow-up with a quick jab to the head to knock his pants off, then target his chest with a series of hooks. Keep this up until you've depleted half of Hippo's health or so.

Once you've depleted half of Hippo's health, he'll try out a new move: a two-fisted slam. There are two ways to deal with this: Ducking or Countering . Ducking is the easier of the two, but Countering is much more effective (which leads into the One-Punch-Knockdown). If you're going for the duck, wait until he backs up then duck just as he raises both fists (when he flashes red)--just be aware that he's not left vulnerable afterward, so you'll have to dodge another move in order to inflict some pain. However, if you want to counter, hook him the very moment he flashes red (and not a moment before)--this will knock off his crown and send him reeling back. Do the exact same thing once more for an instant TKO!

If you're having difficulty performing the One-Punch-Knockdown, either duck keep dodging and countering his moves, much like you did in the beginning, or try to use Star Punches (by blocking and countering his jabs). It'll take longer, but you'll eventually end up triumphed.

Star Opportunities

  • Hippo will occasionally pause to pull up his pants, during which he'll flash gold. Punch him then for a Star.
  • Block Hippo's jab attack then immediately counter with a hook to his bellybutton (you should punch with the same fist that King Hippo uses--that is, if he punched with his right fist, counter with your right).

One-Punch-Knockdown

In order to perform the One-Punch-Knockdown on King Hippo, you'll first have to knock off his crown. To knock off his crown, perform a hook the moment he flashes when he backs up to deal his double-fisted slam move. With his crown removed, then repeat the same manuver once more for an instant Knock-Out!

Challenges

Win the fight…without getting tired.

This one isn't so bad; simply win the bout without tiring Little Mac out--remember, you only get tired by having your punches blocked. As long as you follow out walkthrough above, or use the One-Punch-Knockdown, this shouldn't be a problem.

Piston Hondo

Quick Tips

  • The left-dodge is the only move that can evade both of Hondo's attacks (excluding the Hondo Rush).
  • Star Punch Hondo anytime during his bow for an instant knockdown!
  • When it comes to the Hondo Rush (his three-strike move), counter it for a one-punch-knockout instead of dodging all three strikes. Check our "One-Punch-Knockout" section for more. If you're having trouble with the timing, block each punch instead (remember to press "Up" again after each successful block to continue blocking!)

Walkthrough

Piston Hondo's a nice relief after the difficult King Hippo. Though he has one particularly nasty move, the rest are easy to dodge…plus he has some glaring weaknesses. Let's get started!

Okay, so Hondo has three main moves, in addition to the "Hondo Rush," which we'll touch on shortly. All three can be evaded with a left-dodge, so make that your primary defense mechanism. His first move is a jab, which is preceded by an eyebrow raise. If you have good timing, counter this with a jab the moment he flashes red (after raising his eyebrow) for an easy star. If you're having trouble countering, use a left-dodge instead sometime during his eyebrow twitch. His second move is a wind-up hook from the left--evade with a left-dodge (just after his wind-up) then immediately counter with a series of punches! His third move looks very similar to the second, except it's a bit higher and has no wind-up, so you'll want to dodge it sooner.

Periodically, Hondo will bow during battle, leaving him open to attack, which will yield a star if you strike him when he flashes gold (just as he completes his bow). However, if you already have a star, perform a Star Punch anytime during his bow for an instant KO. Note that Hondo will always bow early in the fight--specifically his fourth move. You have two chances to earn a star before then, so obtain one and nail him with it during his bow for an early KO!

Now Hondo's third move is also the trickiest: The Hondo Rush. You know it's coming when Hondo backs up and dances around briefly before stepping forward with a three-punch combo--it's brutal. For those with good timing, strike him just as he steps forward (right before he flashes red) for a One-Punch-Knockout! However, if that's giving you trouble, try blocking (and not dodging!) the trio of punches instead--just remember to re-block after each successful block, otherwise you'll be left open to attack!

Star Opportunities

  • Jab Hondo just after he twitches his "eyebrow" (just after the sound stops)--when he flashes red.
  • Piston will sometimes take a moment to pay you respect with a Bow--punch him just as he completes the initial bow (when he flashes gold).

One-Punch-Knockdown

  • Star Punch Hondo anytime during his bow for an instant knockdown!
  • When Piston backs up and dances around in preparation of his the "Hondo Rush" (his three-strike move), punch him the moment he starts stepping forward to attack (before he flashes red).

Challenges

Defeat Piston Hondo and land EVERY punch thrown!

Don't miss a punch! As long as you follow our walkthrough above, this shouldn't give you any trouble. You can expedite things by making heavy use of the "One-Punch-Knockouts" to reduce the amount of punches you throw, thereby reducing the amount of chances to mess up.

Bear Hugger

Quick Tips

  • Bear Hugger always opens the match with a taunt, giving you an easy chance for a Star with a counter. Save the Star Punch for his second taunt, 5 moves later, for an instant KO.
  • The Bear Hug can only be avoided either by ducking (which is easiest) or countering for a Star, which is tougher.
  • Every one of Bear Hugger's attacks can be countered for a Star. Check our "Star Opportunities" list below for more.
  • Star Punch Bear Hugger during either of his taunts for an One-Punch-Knockdown!

Walkthrough

This heavy-weight also has three main moves, one of which is devastating. His two primary moves, a jab-from the right, and a downward punch from the left, can both be evaded with a left-dodge just as they flash red (shortly after he pulls or raises his fist into the attack position). However, both can also be countered to earn a Star if you land a punch the moment they flash red--this can be tricky, so stick to dodging if this gives you trouble. After a successful dodge, immediatly follow-up with a series of jabs to the ahead (avoid using hooks, as they can't be combo'd, so you'll only get one attack in).

Now Bear Hugger's third move, which is aptly an actual bear hug, can be deadly! It can only be avoided by ducking, or if you have impeccable timing, a counter. For most players, you'll find ducking's the way to go--simply duck shortly after he raises his foot, when he flashes red, then follow-up with some jabs. If you're feeling gutsy, you can counter his attack for a Star instead. Punch him the very moment you see him flash red for it.

Alright, so we've mentioned Stars a few times, so let's delve into them. Bear Hugger provides plenty of ways to earn 'em, either by countering his moves, or by punching him during either taunt (specifically, a jab during his main taunt, or a hook when his belly swings close during his "let's dance" taunt). Once you have a Star, it's generally best to save it and unleash the Star Punch during his next taunt, resulting in a One-Punch-Knockdown! If you're having trouble timing it, you may want to unleash the Star Punch when he's stunned instead--it won't be nearly as effective, but at least it'll connect. If you're having counter and/or earning stars, just focus on dodging Bear Hugger's attacks (remember, dodge-left for every attack, except for the Bear Hug, which requires a duck) and immediately following up with a series of jabs (not hooks!).

Star Opportunities

  • Jab Bear Hugger when flashes gold during his taunt, when he sticks his tongue out at you.
  • When Bear Hugger backs away and taunts you by twirling his hips ("let's dance"), hook him when he swings his belly toward you (he does it twice, so it's easier if you wait for the second time).
  • When you see Bear Hugger getting ready for the Bear Hug, get ready to punch him the moment he flashes red, shortly after he raises his foot.
  • Punch Bear Hugger the moment he flashes red, just after he pulls his fist back to the left, before his downward punch.
  • Punch Bear Hugger the moment he flashes red, just after he pulls back to the right for his hook.

One-Punch-Knockdown

  • Star Punch Bear Hugger anytime during his taunt, when he sticks his tongue out at you, for an instant KO!
  • Whenever he backs away and twirls his hips ("let's dance"), Star Punch him as his belly gets close for an instant KO!

Easy enough! Either duck or counter each Bear Hug (we strongly suggest ducking, as it's much easier). Of course, the faster you take down Hugger, the less Bear Hugs you'll have to evade, so this challenge kind of goes hand-in-hand with the one below.

TKO Bear Hugger in Round 1.

It's easier than it sounds--really! The trick is to earn a star at a time by countering his moves and unleashing a Star Punch during either of his taunts for an instant KO--do it three times and he's out for good. Remember, Bear Hugger always opens the match with a taunt, giving you an easy star. Once you have a star, that's all you need, so continually dodge his attacks until a taunt comes up. If you don't mind counting his moves, his second taunt is move 6, followed by another 4, then his third 7 after that. If you miss one, don't worry, more will be coming.

Check out our "Star Opportunities" list above to learn all 5 ways, and perform each during a single match. You do not have to win.

Great Tiger

Quick Tips

  • The match always begins with three of Tiger's jabs, each of the "star" variety--jab him each time the jewel lights up for an easy three stars.
  • If Tiger's turban jewel flashes red, dodge it instead of countering.
  • Evade the Rushing Magic Attack by dodging in the direction the "real" Giant Tiger is attacking from.
  • Both of Tiger's uppercuts can be countered with a punch (when he flashes red) for a Star.

Great Tiger likes to switch things up by having four main attacks: a jab, two uppercuts, and the Rushing Magic Attack. He uses the jab most often, which you can tell is coming because the jewel on his turban lights up as either yellow or red beforehand. These attacks can be either dodged, blocked, or sometimes countered--the method you use should depend on your skill level. Blocking is easiest, but only allows you to get in a single hit afterward. Instead, you should dodge or duck just after the jewel starts glowing, then follow-up with a series of punches while he's stunned. However, if you have a sharp eye and good reflexes, you might be best off countering. Here's the thing: Before each jab, the jewel will glow either yellow or red--if yellow, that means he'll yield a Star if you jab him right then, while it's lit. But if it's red, do not attempt to counter--your attack will miss, and Tiger will immediately counter with an attack of his own!

Great Tiger also has two very similar looking uppercut attacks that can be difficult to differentiate. Thankfully, it also doesn't much matter. Either one can be avoided by dodging in the direction of the attack (just as he locks into position), or by countering with a well-timed hook the moment he flashes red for a Star (this is very tricky to do).

Great Tiger's final attack is also his trickiest: the Rushing Magic Attack. In this attack, a "shadow" version of Tiger will also appear and will attempt to throw you off. Keep your eye solely on the real Great Tiger (the non-transparent one) and watch which side he takes to--that is the same side you'll have to dodge to in just a moment (we prefer to move our thumb directly over the respective control pad direction so we don't screw up!). Now get ready for action when the jewel on his turban lights up, as that means he's about to rush you. You have two options: Dodge or Counter (resulting in a one-hit-knockdown.) In order to evade it, you need to dodge in the direction he's attacking from a mere moment after his jewel lights up (do not wait for him to actually attack--there's not enough time to react). To complicate matters, his "shadow" version will also attempt to rush you at times, as indicated by the jewel on his head glowing--ignore him, as he deals no damage, and keep your focus on the real Tiger's attack. Now if you're feeling gutsy, you can attempt to take him down with the one-hit-knockdown. To do so, you need to hook him as he's rushing you, which means you need to start your hook just before his attack (as there's not enough time for you to react otherwise). The first time he does this attack, listen for the accompanying sound and perform your hook the moment you hear it "pulse" a second time.

Star Opportunities

  • Just before Great Tiger performs his jab attack, the jewel on his turban will glow either yellow or red--if it glows yellow, jab him while it's illuminated for a Star!
  • When Tiger crouches to either side in preparation of an uppercut, punch him the moment you see him glow red (just after he "locks" into position).

One-Punch-Knockdown

  • Hook Great Tiger while he's charging toward you during his Rushing Tiger Attack. Timing can be tricky--try listening for the second "pulse" of his turban's jewel and start swinging then.
  • Challenges

Win the fight and evade EVERY Rushing Magic Attack!

You can complete this objective either by dodging (remember, dodge in the direction that the real Great Tiger is coming from) or countering him with the One-Punch-Knockout. The former is easier, but the latter is quicker--plus you can do it at the same time as the third objective, below.

TKO or KO Great Tiger only using right jabs!

You read right--you can only use right jabs! That means no Star Punches, or anything that's not a right-jab! But thankfully, it's not too difficult. Just make sure to evade each of his moves (including his jabs!), then attack with right-jabs ONLY! Oh, and be sure to dodge his Rushing Magic Attack--it can't be countered with a jab!

TKO Great Tiger…in only 3 punches!!!

For this challenge, you're going to use the One-Punch-Knockdown during his "Rushing Magic Attack" three times in order to take him down--check the "One-Punch-Knockdown" section above for more. Now keep in mind that is the only time you can punch, so you'll have to evade or block every one of Tiger's attacks between his Rushing Magic Attack--also, you can't miss any punches either. Check the "walkthrough" above for tips on how to evade his attacks.

    Don Flamenco

    Quick Tips

    • The left-dodge can evade every one of Flameco's attacks, except for his "olé" uppercut, in which case you should dodge to the right (remember: if you see him preparing an attack on the far right, dodge in that direction).
    • Flamenco's triple-punch is tough to avoid--try left-dodging every time you hear the "rattle" sound.
    • If you evade Flamenco's triple-punch attack using three left-dodges (and nothing else, such as ducking)--he'll tire out afterward, giving you a Star opportunity.

    Walkthrough

Don Flamenco possesses the widest array of moves yet, making him a formidable opponent. Yet, he has a strange affinity for taunting you, and will spend much of the match doing so if you don't intervene. If you wait it out, he will eventually attack you with one of several moves. However, these moves cannot be countered, for whatever reason, so you had better dodge out of the way, then follow-up with a series of attacks while he's recovering. If you're the impatient type, you can attempt to punch him during his taunt (which he will always dodge), forcing him to attack--although these attacks are the same he would have otherwise used, they can actually be countered for Stars (more on that shortly).

Alright, so here are the moves Don uses: His three primary attacks are uppercuts that he'll launch into either from the left, right, or center. If he takes to the left, wait for him to rattle his fist, then dodge when he flashes red. His center uppercut gives the least amount of warning, so dodge just after you spot him going for it. Finally, when he steps off to the right and yells "olé," dodge to the right. Eventually, he'll introduce a fourth move where he takes either side and claps before jabbing--dodge just after the second clap. Now, each of the aforementioned attacks can be countered for Stars--but this is recommended only for players confident in their timing. To earn a star, simply hook Flamenco just after he flashes red during any of his attacks (check our "Star Opportunities" section below for more).

Don Flamenco does have one more attack we haven't mentioned: the Triple-Punch. In this one, he'll swing at you three times before giving up! Now here's the weird part, depending on how you dodge it, he'll either tire out, or follow-up with a second attack! As such, your best bet is to use the left-dodge each time you hear the "rattle" noise to evade each punch--doing so will tire Flamenco out, making him vulnerable to attack--in addition to yielding a gold Star if you punch him just when he flashes gold.

Oh, one little surprise awaits you too: after inflicting enough damage, Flamenco will lose his toupee. Get ready for a very upset and faster Flamenco now!

    • If you "left-dodge" (and only left-dodge) all three of Flameco's triple-punch attack, he'll tire out--punch him when he flashes gold.
    • If Don takes to the right and claps, hook up just after he flashes red.

Knock Don's toupee off in Round 1!!

There's no special trick to knocking off Don's toupee--it just comes down to inflicting enough damage within the first round, as his toupee always flies off after just before the third knockout (specifically, after the second knockout, his toupee will fly off once his health is down to 1/3). However, time is tight, so you're going to have to unleash those Star Punches (specifically, you'll want to unleash two 3-Star punches, and finish off his remaining health with a single-star punch!)--consult our "Star Opportunities" list above for some tips.

    Aran Ryan

    Quick Tips

    • Hooks, jabs, right, left--it's all good. That's right, all punches function the same against Aran, so it comes down to timing. As such, it's easiest to stick to just one type of punch for the entire match.
    • Counter, counter, counter! While Aran's moves can easily be dodged, you'll only be able to punch him once afterward before he recovers. However, if you counter (by punching him when he flashes red during any of his attacks), he'll become stunned, allowing you to string together punches.
    • If you're having trouble countering any of his attacks, keep this in mind: Every attack can be evaded with a right-dodge. So if you're having a hard time, try dodging to the right instead!
    • Stars! Punch Aran when he flashes gold during his taunt for counter his hook from the left for easy stars--just make sure to use your Star Punch only when he's stunned!

    Walkthrough

    No Caption Provided

Aran Ryan comes as welcome relief after the last few bouts. Though he moves around a lot, his moves are quite easy to evade and counter, as he provides plenty of warning before each one. Now here's the deal: While each of his attacks can easily be dodged (the right-dodge works every time!), he's only vulnerable to a single punch afterward. As such, you really need to counter in order to get in any attacks. Thankfully, it's super easy. Simply punch (any punch will work) the moment you see him flash red during any of his attacks to stun him, then lay into him with a series of punches (again, any punch works).

Onto his attacks! His first attack is a winding punch from the center--counter it with a punch just when he flashes red, after the initial wind-up. His second move has him crouching to the right and knocking his head with his fist just before a hook--counter this the moment he flashes red, just after the second knock. Now if you see him crouch to the left, before his uppercut, counter him the same way to earn a Star! After the first knockout, Aran will try out a new move: A charge from the ropes. Like the rest of his moves, either counter or dodge the moment he flashes red, before he starts charging.

Aran also will taunt you periodically, wiping his nose and asking "is that it?" or some similar catch phrase. Plant a fist on him when you see him flash gold, just after the nose wipe, for a Star. Just make sure to unleash your Star Punches only when Aran's stunned, after countering, otherwise it'll likely miss.

    Soda Popinski

    Quick Tips

    • Counter Soda's hooks for stars, but dodge his uppercuts.
    • Soda always opens the match with two hooks, giving you an easy shot at two-Stars, right off the bat.
    • When Soda whips out the bottle, jab it quickly not just for a Star, but to also prevent him from drinking it for a health boost.
    • Soda unleashes a 3 or 4 punch-combo after every knockdown or Star Punch. Perform the first two dodges as soon as he steps forward, then wait a brief moment before the next one or two.

    Walkthrough

    No Caption Provided
    No Caption Provided

Soda Popinski's caffeine-fueled attacks are fast and powerful, requiring lighting-fast reflexes to dodge or counter. Thankfully, he only has three main attacks, A hook from the center, an uppercut from either side, and a hook from the far right. When it comes to the hook, this can be evaded with a right-dodge or countered. Being as the timing is practically identical for either--that is, dodge or jab the moment you see him readying the attack--you're best off going for the jab, as it'll net you a star. His second main attack has Soda crouching to either side, then launching into an uppercut--dodge in either direction the moment you see him crouch (this requires lightning fast reflexes), then follow-up with a series of punches afterward. His final main attack is a hook from the far-right--dodge left or duck as soon as he blinks red, then immediately counter with a series of jabs.

After being knocked down or star-punched, Soda will will turn red and come back at you with a three or four-strike combo. You'll have to perform three or four-quick dodges in order to avoid each attack. Perform the first the moment he steps forward, then a second immediately after. Now wait a very brief moment before performing the third dodge (but perform the fourth immediately after, if it's required). Once he's finished, he's left briefly vulnerable, so give him some quick attacks.

Periodically, Popinski will pull out a bottle and try to take a swig out of it; if he does, he'll fully regain his health! Stop this by jabbing the bottle with the closest fist--this will also earn you a Star. In addition, Soda will sometimes put his hands on his waist and laugh--punch him when he flashes gold for a Star. So when should you unleash the Star Punch? Pretty much anytime he's not attacking should be fine, through we prefer to unleash them just after he recovers from a series of punches following a stun.

    Bald Bull

    Quick Tips

    • Bull always opens the match with three of his twirl-punches, giving you an easy chance to earn three stars!
    • The left-dodge is the only evasive move that can avoid every one of Bull's attacks, so make it your default evasive option!
    • The Bull Charge can be countered with either a right-hook or Star Punch for a one-punch-knockdown.

    Walkthrough

    No Caption Provided
    No Caption Provided

Bald Bull's not a happy camper, and his powerful attacks reflect this. His three main attacks all have fairly obvious tells, making them easy to dodge (the left-dodge, in fact, can evade every one of his attacks!). Bald Bull's first attack has crouch down to either side and twirling his fists--evade this with a dodge just after he stands up, before the punch, then immediately follow-up with a series of jabs--time the 3rd jab just right to earn a Star (wait just a moment after the second punch to launch the third)! His second move is an fast uppercut from the left--evade with a left-dodge the moment you identify the attack. Bull's third attack looks similar to the upper-cut, except he'll shake both of his fists before punching--this can be either dodged or countered. If evading, left-dodge just after the second shake--if countering, jab him a moment after, when you see him flash red, earning you a Star.

Now Bald Bull, true to his name, also has a "Bull Charge" move, where he'll rest against the ropes just before charging at you several times in a row. The easiest way to deal with this is to dodge a moment after you see him blow steam out of his nose--remember, he may charge several more times too! However, you can also counter this for a one-hit-knockdown! Simply hook him the very moment you see him start running at you (this requires super-fast reflexes!), but is the fastest and easiest way to deal with him.

One more thing--if you get hit by any of Bull's uppercuts, he'll taunt you shortly after. Punch him when he flashes gold for a Star!

    Super Macho Man

    Quick Tips

    • The right-dodge can evade most of Macho Man's attacks, except for the spinning clothesline ones, so make it your go-to evasive move!
    • After evading Macho's "Crunch Time" attack, follow-up with six Jabs to earn yourself a star! See our "Star Opportunities" list below for more.

    Walkthrough

    No Caption Provided
    No Caption Provided

Super Macho Man starts off relatively simple, but introduces a couple of tricky moves after the first KO that require good timing to evade. At any rate, Super Macho Man only has two moves to start with: An Uppercut from the right, and another from the left. The one from the right is a bit slower, allowing more time to react: Dodge either left or right the moment he flashes red, then follow-up with a series of punches (use alternating jabs, and wait a brief moment after the fourth his to get in two more). Now his uppercut from the left (also known as "crunch time") is a bit quicker, so dodge either left or right the moment you see him preparing the attack, then follow-up with a series of jabs (and not hooks, as it's possible to get more jabs in)--time it right, and you'll earn a Star on the sixth jab! To do so, unleash the first four punches quickly, then wait a brief moment and follow-up with two more jabs (with the first closest in the direction he's flailing).

Now Super Macho Man has a huge ego, and will occasionally strike a "photo op" pose--jab him when he flashes gold for a Star (if you're quick, you can get in a second jab while he's reeling in pain)! Speaking of stars, it's pretty easy to rack up three if you're good at following up his Crunch Time attack with six jabs. Once you've stocked three stars, it's best to unleash a Star Punch while he's stunned.

After the first KO, Macho Man will introduce a couple of new clothesline attacks. The first is a spinning clothesline attack--you can tell he's about to unleash it when he backs away and makes a "leather" type sound--duck just after you hear that sound, then follow-up with some punches! His second move has him taking a step back to the left and exclaiming "pump it"--immediately either duck or right-dodge as soon as you spot the attack, and follow-up with some counter-attacks.

After the second KO, Macho Man will unleash his most devastating attack: a triple-hit clothesline. In order to dodge this, you'll have to duck three times with good timing. When you see him put on his sun glasses and start posing (while saying his own name)--get ready. Wait until he raises his fist (shortly after the glow appears behind him) and quickly dodge three times in a row, one right after another, to dodge his three attacks!

    Mr. Sandman

    Quick Tips

    • Get into the proper rhythm! Most of Sandman's attacks can be countered with jabs. As such, from the moment the match begins, you can counter most of his moves by performing a jab at regular intervals.
    • If Sandman's stunned (such as by countering immediately after a dodge), use hook attacks only, as he'll block your jabs.
    • If you're finding it difficult to hold onto your Stars, try unleashing a Star Punch the moment you earn one.

    Walkthrough

Mr. Sandman is without a doubt the toughest opponent in Punch-Out--not only do his attacks come super-fast, but they're super-strong as well! The trick is to dodge his attacks, follow-up with a single jab, then a series of hooks to his unguarded body. Of course, dodging his attacks is the hard part.

Sandman's first attack is a downward swipe from the right--evade with a dodge the moment you identify the attack, then follow-up with a jab to the head, then switch to using hooks! His second move is raising a fist to the left while saying "stand still"--wait for him to flash red, then dodge and immediately follow-up with a jab, then hooks. Alternativley, you can counter this attack for a Star--jab him the moment you see him flash red--it's almost easier than dodging. His third move is a quick jab from the left--as soon as you see him take a step back, dodge to the right!

After the first knockdown, Sandman will come back with a new move: his "night night" hook from the far right-wait for him to crouch into position, then dodge the moment he flashes red, and follow-up with the usual single-jab+hook combo.

Sandman's most devastating move is his 3-uppercut combo, called the Dreamland Express. If you spot Sandman backup a foot from the center, get ready for it. Now sometimes he'll try and fake you out before hand by saying "boo"--try to avoid falling for it, and instead get ready to dodge three times in a row as soon as he crouches down, just before he launches his uppercut. A dodge to either side works, just make sure to dodge three-times in a row without delay! As soon as you've dodged the last uppercut, unleash a right-hook for a Star!

    Need Help?
    • Health Boost! After knocking an opponent down, shake the Wiimote and Nunchuck or hammer on the 1+2 buttons simultaneously (depends on control scheme) as fast as you can to slowly regain energy before they get back up!
    • Recover Health Before Rounds 2 or 3:Between rounds, when Doc gives you advice, press the - (minus) button to have Doc eat a candy bar, which will refill most of your life before the next round. You can only do this once per match, so save it for when you're low on energy.
    • Extra Life! If you're in the process of being TKO'd (the animation just before Little Mac falls to the ground), immediately shake the Wiimote and Nunchuck or hammer on the 1+2 buttons (depending on control scheme) to have a chance at coming back one last time with a slight bit of health.

    Star Opportunities

    • Jab Sandman the very moment you spot him going for his downward Swipe from the right for a Star (it's the attack he always opens the match with).
    • When Sandman raises a fist to the left (and says "Stand Still"), jab him the moment he flashes red for a Star. It's one of his slower attacks.
    • When Sandman steps back and tries to spook you by saying "Boo," jab him that very moment for a Star!
    • After dodging his Dreamland Express, immediatly follow-up with a right-hook (or left hook?) for a star.

    Challenges

Win the fight and evade every Dreamland Express (3-Uppercut Combo).

This one's actually not too bad, in the grand scheme of things. Simply dodge all three uppercuts every time he performs this attack. Remember: After dodging the first, immediately dodge twice more in rapid succession without delay!

Find 7 different ways to earn Stars

Consult our Star Opportunities above and perform each actions during the match--you do not have to win.

Win the fight without dodging, ducking, or blocking a punch!

Yup, that means you have to counter every one of Sandman's attacks. Follow our walkthrough and "Star Opportunities" list above to learn how, and make sure to unleash those Star Punches to whittle his health away.
