It is an all-too-often used phrase to describe a game, but generaly one that boasts to be 'free-roaming' is a lot of fun, presenting you with the freedom to enjoy yourself in whatever way you want. Far Cry 2 however took this way too far and missed out several key ingredients which prevent other free-roamers from becoming this frustrating, tedious mess of a game.

On paper the game sounds fantastic and the attention to detail and creative mechanics and gameplay devices such as the incredible fire effects, the beauty of the trees and vegetation, the lovely lighting system and the gruesome animations of the character heeling himself (yanking bullets etc from his body) are impressive and for a while a least will be enough to keep you playing. However, these are let down by the absence of any real storyline, the lack of any 'good guys' (every person you work for is as bad as the last, thus giving you no motivation for doing any of the missions), and the lack of real variety and beauty in the landscape really lets the game down.

Free-roamers such as GTA4, Fallout, and Fable 2 succeed because although they give you a large area of play which you can expore in whatever way you want, they ladle out huge dollups of deliciously presented vistas, they keep things varied, they limit where you can travel in this free-roaming world and grant new areas as rewards for playing the game. Far Cry 2 however gives you the entire map to wander aimlessly around from the get go. This means that after doing even a little exploration you've already seen all that the game-world has to offer you- and it does not offer a lot- once you've seen a desert, the savannah, a forest and a lake, you've seen it all.

The game world is far too big (and unvaried and uninspiring). You will be forced to travel miles upon miles across the map (past small groups of militants who will do nothing other than annoy rather than cause a fun challenge) either by car or by foot once your car becomes stuck on an uneven bit of ground forcing you to wander for hours across the boring landscape in search of another vehicle. and when you arrive at your destination, your mission will be to travel another irritatingly long distance (often to where you just came from) and then should you die on said mission, you have to do all of the travelling again!

Far Cry 2 tries to do too many things that are uninteresting, it fails to motivate you to put up with the boring bits, and it forces you to throw your controller down in frustration only moments after you talked yourself into forgiving the game for annoying you the last time you played it. Don't by this game- save your money.
