F-Zero tried to make up in graphics what it didn't have in personality

User Rating: 7 | F-Zero SNES
F-Zero was a technical wonder back in the day. At the time, it seemed that the SNES' "mode 7" was what set it apart from the Genesis. In time, it was obvious that "mode 7" wasn't as hard to do and that the SNES hardware had far more important advantadges over its rival's.

But F-Zero was the big technical showcase of the SNES early days. Aaand that's all it was. I was never a fan of it, among other reasons because it lacks any kind of personality. Today, this shortcoming is even more evident. Beyond nostalgia, there's little to motivate the player, the ships look generic and the tracks rather repetitive and flat. Still, F-Zero started a whole sub genre, which Nintendo later refined in the Mario Kart series and Psygnosis redefined in Wipeout. It's good for some renewing of childhood memories, but if you don't miss playing it you won't get much from it at all, and nothing that you can't get in other fantasy or futuristic racers you probably already have at home by now.
