Empire: Total War

Can't get it to run more than 30 minutes...Steam problem?????

I can't seem to get this game to run more than 30 minutes. I can run everything else, so why is this game broken??? I suspect its the D*** steam contraption. I don't know why they make you install it to run the game BUT you can't get around it.
I have a 8800 GTS , 6400 Intel duel core, 8 G ram, Vista 64-bit.. so I don't think it's my system, especially since I can play everything else(FEAR and Witcher to name 2, at max settings). It's so disappointing, I'm sure it's a great game but after a few minutes I start getting video glitches and then it's only a few minutes till the game crashes. I believe they need to get rid of the steam BLOCK!!!! Allow the running of the game by itself.
I own all the total war series and have run them max out with no problems. None of them required steam. I hope they and other game makers stear clear of steam.
