Dynasty Warrior 5 Empires shows improvement from the last "Empires" game. A few good improvements include the ability to give commands to officers and lieutenant generals during a battle, the ability to add stat boosting attributes to a character's weapon, and also the ability to play in Free Mode and determine exactly who does or does not participate in the battle. Even though the games shows some good improvements the battles are very similar to DW4 Empires. The "Empires" mode is very open ended but this gets in the way of an interesting story to be told. Unlike the story mode, there are very few memorable events or cut scenes during the battle. The battles, even the special ones, are very dry and mundane. Defeat an officer, take a base, repeat the same thing until you get to the main camp and either: defeat the officer or take the base. This can get repetitive and tedious after while. And without a very interesting story to support the "Empires" mode you might find yourself skipping many battles simply because you don't feel like fighting. The lack of an interesting story is disappointing. Hopefully they'll add a story mode to the next game.

The repeated pattern of defeating officers and overrunning bases is all you can really expect, as this is the heart of the game. Even so, it's still worth playing.
