All the babes, bacon and big-booms cannot save this game from being a short one-time event...

User Rating: 6 | Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project PC
Duke Nukem – Manhattan Project is a throwback to classic side-scrollers and its a pretty decent game that is still fun in 2011. But it is no more than that.

There are several key aspects of the game that hold it back from being a truly great title: and none of them have anything to do with modern standards or next-gen graphics. The story – or its very limited presence is one of them. One could fill an A4 page with the whole story and being very straightforward and for the most part being not original and full of cheap one-liners does not help either. Another thing is the fact that the same cheesy one-liners that are in the first level can also be heard prominently in last level as well is not very original idea, not to mention that being repeated after each kill of an enemy or death of the main character also creates new lows for the game's audio section. Camera is also a pain in the backside occasionally as it does not provide enough visibility when fighting enemies and there ways to overcome this by using the look-in-direction buttons but yet another downside – those require some serious button skills to utilise to their full extend and are completely useless in boss battles.

Putting these aspects aside, the game does everything else pretty well. The action is solid and fun platforming is smooth and the player is equipped with nearly a dozen weapons to dispose of his enemies. The environments are varied and house a decent amount of creatures to kill, babes to free and secrets to find in 8 chapters each packing 3 missions + a boss at the end of each chapter. Except getting to the end of the level the player can search for 10 Nukes in each level which if collected increase his Ego (health) and ammunition caches. It is a fun concept but it does not provide too much of a challenge and one can go easily without the rewards. Enemies also come in various shapes and sizes and are fun to shoot, but in contrast the bosses are ridiculously easy to beat, and un-inspiring as concepts. The game takes about 10-15 hours to complete and has several difficulty settings if one wishes to continue killing pigs and save babes.

My review is going to stop here as there is nothing else to comment whether it be good or bad and unfortunately the balance leans slightly more to the bad side than it does to the good. It is a decent game that has a fun game-play which is badly seasoned with a cheap humour and a silly, short story. Though fun while it lasts I couldn't shake the feeling that its ultimate purpose is to fill in a couple of lazy afternoons until DNF finally arrives.
