Not the sequel I was hoping for, but still compelling.

User Rating: 7.3 | Dreamfall: The Longest Journey XBOX
Frankly, in comparison to the original Longest Journey, Dreamfall is a disappointment. TLJ was the last great point-and-click adventure game, with all the rich worldbuilding, snarky comments, and tricky inventory puzzles a fan of that genre could ask for. Perhaps its only flaw was the puzzling decision to use bad early 3D to render the characters while sticking to lush prerendered 2D environments.

Dreamfall, I had hoped, would continue this tradition. It doesn't. Dreamfall is a decidedly lackluster action-adventure with very few puzzles of note, and very half-assed (but fortunately rare) combat and stealth sequences. The few significant puzzles were, imho, very poorly clued and tended to rely on my least favorite kind of challenges: requiring musical or linguistic decipherment skills that I simply do not possess.

However, when I say that it's lackluster, I mean it's lackluster as a game. As an experience, as a journey through fascinating other worlds, and as a story, it is phenomenal. I did find myself somewhat irritated by the main character's early whinging, but as the plot took off I found myself all but glued to the screen. The experience was only enhanced by getting to see the plot from two other perspectives, and the melding of plotlines towards the end culminates in a masterful cliffhanger.

I still wish it had been the sequel I really wanted, but I encourage everyone who likes good writing, good characters, and good worldbuilding to at least rent Dreamfall. I think you will find it a rewarding experience.
