You only have one life per character, and receive an additional character upon completing a level. This said, it's fun, but not the best of the series. It's also slightly strange that you end up underground in the second level, and have to fight people who look like they have bloaty head syndrome (Theme Hospital stylee). The extra characters, weapons and moves are novel, but the difficulty is a killer. This said, what is the NES without immense pain?! The cheesy, gritty, acrade-like soundtrack helps a lot though, and will make you fall in love with the little grey box all over again.
