@Chriscrites1115 This is not a extra, it's something they are taking away. Please understand that there are no pre owned games that haven't already been sold as new at some point. Just like every other industry, game publishers have no right to make more money from the same copy of the same game more than once, They have already been paid. and what is more they should have no need to cut into their customers resale value if they make their games worth keeping in the first place. If a game is good enough, there is less of a desire to trade it in, meaning that there won't be enough pre owned copy's available to cut into their profits in a significant way. This kind of behaviour lowers the developers motive to make a game that has replay value. They have your money, and if you feel you didn't get your money's worth and decide to sell it to someone, they can get money from them too. This is just one more step from game publishers/developers to try and destroy the pre owned games market, and we should not support it. If we do, things are likely to get worse and the consequences may go further than you have considered. We talk to the founders of id Software to celebrate their 20th anniversary.
I understand what you guys are saying and I agree with you in a way, but you really need to think about this in a neutral view. These companies only make money when a game is bought new. I know it sucks to pay $60 for a new game and its smarter to wait until the game's hype dies down a little bit and pick it up for $30, but then id doesnt make the money from you. A move like this is extreme and I think it will piss people off more than encourage them to buy new. There is a more reasonable way to ENCOURAGE people to buy new and that is through downloadable content. If a company releases their new game with downloadable content only available to people who bought the game new then people would be more ENCOURAGED to buy new. They could do this by giving the player some advantage that is WORTH the extra money to buy it new. This DLC would give the player an edge (in single player only) that people who bought used would not have. I personally would look at the advantage of buying it new and weigh the advantages and if I thought it was worth it, then I would buy new-if not, then I will wait a couple months. This neither discourages people to buy the game AND it encourages people to buy new.

And the way the that Mr Willits was speaking was disrespectful. And if Rage is successful in pushing SP Pass on us you can bet that in Doom 4 they will use that always online system that Mr Willits said that he would like to force on us.
I hold id responsible for the months of my younger years lost to gaming! Personally, I don't think you are allowed to enjoy gaming (especially FPS games) unless you appreciate what id did for the industry. However, I think they are bringing project $10 to a new low by locking out single player content. This is a bad precedent to set for the future. Once Rage sells well, with this terrible set up included, how long until buying pre-owned becomes no more than a demo version, only allowing you half way through the game until you pay you 10 quid? Game companies were fine before the invention of DRM and project $10. Call of Duty 4 is still making Activision money even though there is no unlockable content for it! As showing in this presentation, gaming used to be about bringing the best experience possible for the people paying their money. Now, it's all about business and the only ones losing out are the customers that these developers are trying to convince us are the most important factor. I love id, but i refuse to allow this precedent to be set, so I cancelled my pre-order and will buy it when it hits the bargain bin
I love id, these guys are the best. I just have to be honest here, though --- I absolutely hate that they are locking out single player content from RAGE unless it's bought new, even though I have RAGE preordered. For a company that has proven time and time again that they are constantly pushing the industry forward, this is really not what I would expect from them. I see only negatives resulting from a move like this. Less people are going to play their game because of this, and new fans they may have made that could have ended up purchasing later id titles will never play RAGE now because the option to purchase the game used or rent it and still experience the whole game was not there. I really don't see this increasing sales of new copies of the game at all. I just see it really upsetting customers and resulting in them just completely skipping over RAGE. There are too many other great games coming out without terrible limitations upon them that a customer could choose to buy used over RAGE. I really hope RAGE is successful, but I really don't see this helping at all.
Id Software's RAGE and Id Tech 5 is Open GL based, read NOT MICROSOFT yet even Id Soft is forced to code and comply for Xbox 360 (it does not use OpenGL) and Vista and 7 which initially made it hard for OpenGL game programmers to make applications work under those OSs. And Linux, are you kidding me, its a joke, less than .95% user base due to the fact that there are no programs nobody willing to work for free to establish a userbase.
And yes sorry to break it to you but Direct X is a Microsoft proprietary intellectual property that is registered as a trademark and pattented, they and they alone control and direct (pun intended) when and how it gets used. They knew that GPUs were going to leap over twice the power of previous GPUs from 2005 and become more advanced due to the new architectures yet they simply and greedily rushed the GPU in X360 for Dx9c holding back technology as it is now for the current TEN years, you have to thank your masters at Microsoft for doing that instead of properly waiting at the least 2 years until late 2007 or at best 2008 to get a GPU as powerfull as the 3870 or 4870, if they had done so your precious PC games would have been DRAMATICALLY different.
@rhazzy Bill Gates was kicked out of college, dropped out and IBM went to his company asking them to make an OS when they were never planning on doing such a thing and IBM could have contracted an actual professional OS developer but thanks to the confusion of back in the day and how over the years things have gone their way there is only Microsoft. Thousands of very intelligent college students graduate with all kinds of degrees and certifications but most of them simply just want to become employees, they don't get organized or try to establish their own software company and get everyone to agree because the majority just wants to become rich overnight and get laid, smoke, inject drugs, party, party and more women, they just want to live the life right away, there is no ambition.
Boycott this GAME!!! Gamers Have Rights!!! They are blocking off Single player content if youbuy this game used! Also ID is also trying to make always online DRM a standard. That means in order to even play single player you have to be connected to the internet!!! Read Gamespots News Article for more info!!!
It was open to them to INVENT games. Haha. And they did. It's harder to do that today, you'll need plenty of creativity to do something new.
and never forget the hours playing quake with the painkiller (or was is painkeep?) mod in internet cafes in romania :D
man i remember being 12 and setting up my first doom 2 lan game over the com 1 ports of a 486 and a 386 at a friends house... i set the bios on both up and his father was afraid i would break his computers doing that... but it worked and i played my first multiplayer fps... those were the times! bring back DOS!

This is the only video on GS that i have watched from start to finish, without skipping a single second. Well worth it. I love Carmack. Congrats on 20 years of success.
thumbs up for ID soft and Mr. Carmack, he feels real passion for his job. I think ID should put more effort on licensing because it was and is really important for company development (at least hire two guys to do that) Anyway, happy happy anniversary and keep going
Great article! I remember Wolfenstein and Doom having them on 3.5" floppy disks. Played all the hours a could, rebelling against my parents who thought it was too violent lol!!
Yes, I too have the freeware Doom and still play it on occassion. And the Quake 3 engine user created games (openarena, Nexuiz, Alien Arena) all rock pretty hard. Openarena still gets much play on me laptop.
The thing is that now the computer are straight started up on the operational system. Given that,advancements are based on the game where hardware and operational system are in battle for something that was already established. To change that like the base of planet interactions that are not virtual, business is all about RAGE when knowledge in fact raise the mind to not accept these money activities the way are made today. Knowledge was made for the digital,electronics and virtual where reality isn't about this level of money activity. Getting expensive to play more better looking games and interaction possibility, other level of more simple games is what are making like my post in here the literature to be built forward these dying study. For the RAGE then all drunk and sort off many drug addict interactions that majority are trying scape for the money,the planet remains to know what was made and violence must take over these smiles to drive over you the end of the world. The planet at the empty space to be reaching there. WDHellS

Great interview and insight into ID, ive never been the biggest fan of ID games but i have admired them for many many years, wasted hundreds of hours on quake 3 on dreamcast online!
Man I'm looking forward to Rage. I hope none of the compromises they had to make for the console versions make into the PC. I would be MORE than willing to plonk down the cash for an upgrade if it's going to be worth it! Plus, the money-quote for me from Carmack was "Who is Zenimax?" Very few other developers would say something like that openly about their parent company, or say it without sounding like a smart-ass. Love Carmack's no-nonsense no-unnecessary-attitude straight-forward candour. And I haven't heard anyone else sum up the state of indie development today, so succinctly and bluntly either. Everyone is either just rolling off some marketing spiel, being obtuse or not even bothering to address the issue. This man actually thinks about it. And it's disappointing that so very few people understand the value of being small and having an identity. Id gets that, and has been so very careful about maintaining that spirit - another thing I respect about them.
I've been reading "Masters of Doom" the past week and it's so cool to learn about the history of id. Since Blizzard did an anniversary video, I was hoping id would, too, and they didn't disappoint. Excited for Rage.
So sad to get motion sickness just watching the video :) Man Doom was such a great game. I must have wasted 100s hours playing with friends.
one of the very first id games was commander keen, released for DOS in 1990, which i remember playing for hours and hours on my uncle's computer when i was quite young. I absolutely recommend anyone to download it (i think it is now officially freeware, but either way it is very easy to get hold of). It is a wonderful game, with charming graphics, scenes and sprites, and it is also VERY challenging. Happy zapping!
Great video, I remember playing with the Idsoftware team (John Romero mostly) online when Dwango was released for DooM and DooM 2 in the early 90's. Valve is considered a great company, for there own right, but IdSoftware started everything and they were gamers that made games for gamers. Thanks Id, been a fan since Keen.

Doom was the game that really got me hooked into gaming! It was so amazing and I still remember the first time I ever played it. I installed it on a rainy saturday afternoon and played it all day and night into the next day... it was simply that aweseom! :)
