User Rating: 3.5 | DOOM 3DO
I wouldn't be surprised if Doom won the title for "Most Conversions to Gaming Platforms". The quality between these ports varies. Some, like the PSX Doom version are really good. But not all of them are. The 32X version is missing a lot of levels, and the SNES one just feels like a downgrade in many areas, but this one is the worst by a mile. Ultimately, its the framerate that keeps this version nearly unplayable.

The one real advantage of this port is the music. More or less, it's been remastered and is far beyond the MIDI roots of the other versions. The result is an aural masterpiece. All the classic sound effects were converted nicely, and this combined with the amazing soundtrack makes for a game that'll be incredibly pleasant to your ears. If you thought Doom on the PC had an amazing soundtrack, wait until you hear this stuff. You'll be floored. Also, in addition, there's several other, smaller, options that work nicely as well. You can save your settings such as screen size and controls. And to make up for the lack of saving you can access all the levels the port gives you from the start.

A 2 for graphics might seem misleading. Visually, it's around the other Doom versions. The resolution is decent. But the biggest downfall of the graphics is the framerate. Simply put, it's intolerable. From the start it's sluggish, and when the action heats up, this game plays like a slideshow. Not to mention the game has constant pauses to load data, and this ultimately ruins the gameplay. The PC version of Doom is extremely enjoyable since the framerate is extremely smooth. You can appreciate the demon blasting with creative weapons and enemies. The enemy numbers can seem overwhelming but are never impossible.

But thanks to the 3D0 Doom's framerate, it's pretty much impossible to enjoy any of it. The game constantly feels cheap. Thank the framerate. Watching a slideshow version of Doom is no fun. Thank the framerate. Everything just feels incredibly slow and sluggish. Once again, thank the framerate.

Aurally, an 11 if possible. The rest? Failure.
