Fond memories of killing my friends and coworkers.

User Rating: 9.3 | DOOM PC
Doom got my friends and I at work into trouble on more than one occasion. It was our first exposure to LAN deathmatch play and like my coworkers, I was hooked. We used to play this on lunch breaks and after work. I still remember one night, four men walking out of work, heads hung low, lamenting how our wives were going to kill us as it was almost midnight on a weeknight and we of course were NOT working late... It was like being a kid again... "I'm so screwed..." "Yeah, me too..." "I'm saying I had to work late."

We would conference call each other and with telephones cradled against aching necks we'd frag the hours away in this highly addictive and incredibly fun game. I remember a friend telling me, "Man! You need to use the mouse with this not the stupid arrow keys" And taking his advice I found I had a whole lot more fun and died less, well maybe a little less. WASD was a new thing then.

Doom was the shooter that hooked me on shooters which have remained my favorite genre of PC games ever since. I'd seen Wolfenstein and played it alone, but it was the deathmatch in Doom on the company LAN with friends shouting and laughing and trash talking to each other on the conference call that hooked me permanently.

I'll always have fond memories of this game, which along with a few other select titles turned me into a PC gamer for life.
