Surprisingly fun and makes great use of the motion controls, plus a hilariously bad story that's actually good.

There ain't a lot of games, that revolve around natural disasters on the market, the only games that even dared to do so were Disaster Report (or SOS: The Final Escape in Europe) and Raw Digger, both released for the PS2. Now Monolith is making a game revolved around natural disaster, called Disaster: Day of Crisis

Story
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You play as Raymond Bryce, former US Marine, he used to be a member of Blue Ridge City's International Rescue Team, but resigned due to the loss of his friend Steve. A year later, Raymond joined FBI and is hunting down a terrorist group called SURGE, a once proud group, that is seeking revenge against the government for their falling comrades, they've stolen nuclear weapons, and taken seismologist Dr. Davis and his assistant, Lisa Hewitt, as well as demanding money to be sent to the dead SURGE member's families. All that, while a earthquake hits Blue Ridge City. The story is so ridiculous that it's actually hilarious and good, Raymond get's thrown into so many natural disasters so quickly, the soldiers coming after him apparently don't care about the earthquakes and the villain are just like those in The Rock, so in other words, if you've seen The Rock, then you'll know exactly what happens, but like The Rock, it's entertaining and so ridiculous, it's actually good. The story is also told a bit in disaster reports, which are added throughout the game, it does a good job of explaining what hurricanes, earthquakes and so forth are, as well as containing character profiles, it's surprisingly accurate and it's even says that the events that Raymond was thrown into the game, is unrealistic, well as far as the weather goes.

Gameplay
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disaster: Day of Crisis is a mix of several genres, you walk around and explore the game like a normal third person shooter, here you have a stamina bar that goes down from sprinting, cold & warm places, and various other saturations, it sorta makes sense, but even if your in a place where nothing's going on, the stamina bar still goes down easily, though it can be restored by collecting food, or eating crackers. You find health items, food and other items in boxes and barrels, which can be smashed by walking up towards them and shaking the Wiimote or the Nunchuck, likewise if you catch fire, you have to move the Nunchuck and Wiimote up and down to put out the fire. During explore mode, you also find people that needs to be rescued, which can be done by dragging them to a safe place, give them health items or food, heal their wounds or give them heart massage, all uses the motion controls and it works surprisingly well. there's also areas that's covered in dust and smoke and you have to hurry though in order for you to breathe fresh air, it's not a annoying system, though some sections in the game where you can't afford to explore because of the lungs system, then again exploration rarely rewards anything, all you get is SP for you to upgrade your character, there's no secret events to discover, no secret collectables to find either.

The shooting portions of the game is like play The House of the Dead, but it's actually very fun to play, enemies takes more than 1 hit before they go down, so there's some good challenge to get here, you can also get a arsenal of machine guns, handguns, shot guns, and even rocket launchers, crossbows and Gatling guns. It's all really fun, the only pain though, is the fact that when you reload, you have to do nothing else, if you try to reload and go into cover at the same time, you have to start over, which is annoying a lot, especially when you get to get through a section fast. After each shooting section, you gain weapon points, which can be used to buy and upgrade weapons.

There's also driving sections, here you detach the Nunchuck, hold the Wiimote like a steering wheel, and use 2 to accelerate, 1 to break and A for the hand break, and you turn the car, by moving the Wiimote, like you would steer a car, it works fine, but you turn the Wiimote too much and the car won't turn, which is a bit weird, plus the car psychics can be a pain too, it's easily one of the worst sections in the game, though for once it ain't ruined by bad controls.

The rest are just mini games and quick time events, there's sections where you have to run, by moving the Wiimote and Nunchuck up and down, and pressing B for speed boost, and then there's some small quick time events, which works well, though the quick time event at the last boss is utterly pointless, considering the game does most of the job for you in that scene.

Dispite the game taking place over a day, the game takes 10-12 hours to finish, but after that, there's weapons to be upgraded, hidden costumes which can be achieved depending on how well you perform, and titles, which acts like the game's achievements, so there's a lot to do.

Graphics
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nintendo markets the game as having "gripping visuals." While the graphics aren't exactly gripping, the graphics are surprisingly decent, the environments looks a bit grayish at times, but the characters looks good and the frame rate rarely goes down, even in a area with smoke and dust and it doesn't fall at some of the set piece moments either. That being said, it could have looked a bit better, but as it is, it's does at least look decent.

Sound
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The voice acting is cheesy, which fits perfectly with the bad script, the music is decent, though it lacks a bit variety. The sound design can be annoying though, mostly because of Raymond's footsteps, which always makes an annoying sound no matter what.

Overall
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Overall Disaster: Day of Crisis is a surprisingly good game, the controls works surprisingly well, it's fun and the story is so ridiculous it's fun and actually good. It's one of the few games that uses the motion controls really well and it's definitely worth a purchase.
