Have fun with Na-Krul in his hellish crypt!

User Rating: 10 | Hellfire PC
Hellfire is an unofficial expansion for Diablo - unofficial because it isn't made by Blizzard. I'll assume readers are already familiar with the original game, otherwise I may find I'm repeating myself (from my Diablo review).

The biggest and best parts of Hellfire are easily summed up:

~ A new character class, the Monk
~ Two new dungeons to explore, featuring new enemies and bosses
~ A whole new page of spells
~ New items and uniques, including oils

The only notable (perhaps glaring) problem players may be disappointed with is the lack of better screen resolutions to choose from. This impacts most heavily on the newer computers of today, but fans of old-school games may not care about overly pixellated graphics.

The walk speed of all characters in town has two options now, making going to town less of a chore. A new amulet allows characters to carry twice as much gold per inventory slot too, which makes it handy to go shopping for expensive items.

The two new dungeons have their own array of new enemies, but sadly there does not seem to be any bosses for these enemy types. The only bosses are the ones encountered at the end of these areas - one for the Hive, and another (Na-Krul) for the Crypt. By and large, these areas provide some interesting and apt new ambiance music - the Crypt is especially impressive. New tomes in the Crypt offer insights into the story behind Na-Krul, or more accurately, his imprisonment. The voice acting here is particularly good, and fans of Diablo will no doubt want to stop to hear these.

The new character, the Monk, offers a new type of play. As would be expected, his maximum statistics are different to all the other characters - with no real super statistic (as was the case with the other characters), only higher averages for all. This is handy in that players can choose to build him up however they choose, and be able to handle most situations comfortably. As an added bonus, the Monk can attack up to three enemies at once in melee combat - a true bonus that really only shines when you are heavily outnumbered.

The new spells are a mixed bag. Immolation and Lightning Wall are perhaps the most useful, being offensive, but players may soon tire of seeing Search books and scrolls everywhere. On the other hand, the new oils, which can be applied to armours and weapons, offer new temporary bonuses - anything from increased To Hit, to increased durability, Armour Class, or Damage - which can turn the tide of battle.

If you are addicted to Diablo, then you'll want Hellfire. You'll appreciate the new environments, enemy dying noises, and the Monk. Play it today.
