Paid Full Retail For This One.....

User Rating: 6.9 | Defender 2600
I loved my 2600, glitches and all. The flickering graphics, the odd color schemes, and the strangely addictive games. If you could get past the limitations of the system (which was easy to do in the late 70s and early 80s), you found that some of the stand-up games were quite playable on the system. My personal favorites of this genre were Asteroids and Pac-Man. The console and joystick control seemed to favor those titles with simple movements and highly repetitive action.

However, "Simple movements and reptitive action" have never been used to describe Defender. The arcade version used separate controls for movement, thrust, firing, smart bombs and hyperspace. This control layout did not translate very well on the 2600 and its one button joystick.

The gameplay is surprisingly good, and this is where I thought the 2600 always shined. I mark it down to 7.0 based mainly on its retail price at the time, and the clumsiness of the controls. As part of a "greatest hits" package, it is worth a look.
