When the rap lyrics become reality... violence and music collide one more time for EA and Def Jam...

User Rating: 8.7 | Def Jam: Fight for NY XBOX
Wrestling and fighting games have been around since the Nintendo Entertainment System with such games as Double Dragon and Street Gangs. Times have changes and as better graphics become available to gaming developers, fighting games become more complex with background stories and novelties just like a movie. Def Jam: Fight for NY is a nice mix of a story line mixed with fighting, violence, good graphics and great features that you can’t find in many fighting games today. When the first Def Jam game came out, I was impressed with the idea of mixing hip hop, fighting and well known rappers in one game. After playing it for some time, I did grow weary of the game play and moves on the game. This time around, I feel the longevity of the game has increased profusely. The idea of creating your own identity is always a must in most game because the game isn’t about playing as someone else but playing as ‘yourself’. After making a character, the activities inside the game are really well thought out. Learning new moves, grabbing new cloths and styles, and the variety of choices seem apparent in this game. The character selection has also improved with a large cast of rappers and some guest actors as well. The story line takes place AFTER the first game ended with an unknown rescuer (you) who helps D-Mob out and joins the gang. From there, you get to detail the character at the station when the cop who saw the whole thing gives a description of you. After that, you need to prove yourself by going in and help D-Mob out with reorganizing his territory. Snoop Dogg is the rival in this game which makes things interesting for the game. Outside of this, the gameplay is similar if not better than the last game out. The atmosphere with the crowd and the new moves and styles of fighting just added to the excitement of this game. The longevity of the game could be long if you make it worth your while. The story line can get old over time but the game play and developing your character could be interesting with friends and family. The music makes the game since it involves hip hop and rap artists, it has rap and hip hop music. I wasn’t disappointed with the sound in the gameplay and during the menu options as well. The value isn’t bad now since the game is cheap to buy and worth the money. Since the next Def Jam game will be for the ‘next generation consoles’, Def Jam: Fight for NY is a great buy if you aren’t going to buy anything new for awhile.
