Deathspank is one of the best downloadable games available on consoles.
Deathspank is an action rpg. A hack n slash RPG actually. And its very entertaining. There isn't much depth to speak up, leveling is pretty much automatic and you pretty much just get to pick between 3 different trait enhancements every level up. The combat is shallow and mainly consists of hammering on the button that the weapon you want to use is set to. But this is always fun even if it is simple and repetitive, I never got tired of hacking away at the enemies of various shapes, colors and attack styles.
The story, like the gameplay, isn't too terribly deep. The story is interesting and funny, and you'll want to keep going to find out what's going to unfold. All of the people you meet in the story are saturated with the humor that this game is all made up from. Each conversation is different and many of them can become very interesting. Conversations with Eubrick and the witch are especially memorable. The story's conclusion is somewhat disappointing, but it leads you straight into the sequel (As it would seem.) I really hope that Hothead Games makes this into a series, rather than just doing 2 games under the name.
The graphics really shine in this game, not because they are technically superior to other games or because it has great lighting and such, but because of the artistic styling behind it. Deathspank's environments are basically completely 2D, and the characters are in 3D. Interesting concept and it works really well and looks good. It really suits the game's tone. The colors are all pretty vibrant and really pop. Each area really feels different than the last and it makes it exciting to move onto the next area.
This game seems like it has a lot of content. With 70 side quests and what seems to be a big world map. But it ends rather quickly. I finished the game with %100 completion having done all side quests and having reached the final level, and the total amount of time taken to do this was 6 and a half hours. So a quick playthrough not really bothering with sidequests could be terribly short. But whatever amount of time you get from this game, every bit of it will be great and satisfying. I've never felt like I've spent my money so wisely as I do now with this downloadable title.
Deathspank is an amazing game that will grab hold of you and won't let go. You'll be thinking about Deathspank at work or school, and when you finally get to play it you will be so excited. Its really addicting and great for gamers who like action rpgs, because not many of them are released anymore. $15 is definitely an appropriate price for this game and will definitely be worth it!
