Hilarious, sometimes exciting but flawed.

User Rating: 6 | Deadpool PS4

Deadpool is a hilarious game. With that being said, is it the best superhero game ever? Look at my score and you’ll see that isn’t the case but I feel a 6/10 isn’t necessarily a bad game and this is the case. It has its faults but it does a lot of ‘great’ moments thrown in. It starts off strong, exciting combat mixed with an excellent performance, not by Ryan Reynolds but the excellent Nolan North. While I would’ve loved to have Ryan Reynolds reprise his role, Nolan North does the character exceptionally well.

Graphically it feels last gen and that’s because it was. The PS4 version is just a port of the older console versions. It’s not the ugliest game on the PS4 but it doesn’t turn heads. Still, it does have a decent amount of detail to the characters. Nothing to write home about but not horrible.

The story is pretty much nonexistent. Deadpool quite literally throws away the script and any exposition are pretty much thrown away, it’s creative how the game progresses in terms of an actual story and that is part of the charm. Mostly you’re just going through the levels without much exposition of to what is going on and it works. The humor is absolutely excellent and the jokes range from ‘seen before’ to some really creative ones including one about halfway through that nearly had me on the floor.

In absence of an actual major story, it does feel like satire for most of the video game industry. It parodies many other games and it does it well. There are plenty of fourth wall breaks and even the game makes fun of its own faults. In a way, it’s very self-aware that it’s not a perfect game and that it has its clichés. It wears its heart on its sleeve and it’s better for that.

The combat is pretty good but it does wear down near the end. It does feel rather repetitive about halfway through but I beat it anyways. It’s only 7 hours long and it does have some moments to break up the tedium which I appreciated but since it was wearing down I feel it is a good length for this kind of game and for the current price.

There are plenty of upgrades to get which does make the game a bit more manageable. The challenge felt fair for the most part but there is one major flaw that everyone should be aware of. The ‘final’ battle is the most frustrating thing I have played in years. It’s pretty much an enemy rush and there is barely any time to recover in between waves and gather ammo. It’s so frustrating I ended up restarting the last chapter on easy mode just to finish and even then it was still difficult. It feels rushed, unfair and quite frankly left a sour taste in my mouth. It was probably obvious they were rushed to get the game out but I wish games would stop doing this in lieu of a final boss fight. It’s not fun.

Is it worth it? It’s short, gets a bit repetitive and has a frustrating final level. I liked it but I don’t see myself playing it again. There is no new game plus that I can see so once you beat it, there probably isn’t much incentive to replay it. I’d say just rent it but because it’s so cheap, you might as well buy it. It’s worth a single playthrough for the humor. It does have some issues that prevent it from being a great game but don’t let that detract you. The humor is well worth any repetition or frustration you will encounter.
