Take all of the exciting objectives from Dead Space 2, cram them into an hours' worth of DLC, and you get Severed.

User Rating: 6 | Dead Space 2: Severed PS3
With Severed, we see the return of Gabe Weller, one of the protagonists of Dead Space Extraction. Gabe is now a part of the Sprawl Security Force, and is married to Lexine, you know, that girl who offered ass to stare at in one moment in Extraction (aw yeah...). As it turns out, the Sprawl becomes infected because of "you know what", and Gabe has to go find his lover before it's too late. But more events unfold beyond the Necromorph outbreak, as Gabe soon finds out there is more at stake than just his girlfriend.

You might think I'm being brief, but that's basically it. This is a very short piece of DLC that will barely last you an hour or so, even on your first play through. What bothers me the most about this is the fact that most of the pathways in Severed are recycled from a game that was already recycling many areas from its predecessor, which was repetitive as it was? So what I'm getting at is that the series is in dire need of being in a different part of the damn galaxy all together.

Also, Severed also gives you a mini tutorial to the game. Why? Well, just in case you bought Dead Space 2 and Severed at the same time, and waited an hour for Severed to download just to play it first, then you would know how to play it. Because, I'm sure everybody will do that when they buy this game *sarcasm*. This tutorial wouldn't be bad, if it didn't mess with the pace of the game. I mean, what's the point of re-teaching something that is firmly established into our minds? It's pointless, and it really shouldn't exsist

Besides being short and recycled, Severed offers a lot of fantastic objectives that take the best elements of Dead Space 2, and expand upon them. Like for example, when Gabe is riding an elevator and it suddenly breaks apart, leaving Gabe hanging from the shaft while enemies come to try and hug him. It gets pretty tense, and it really adds to the excitement that is found in Severed, what with its excellent set-piece moments and constant push forward into the story.

The game costs 7 dollars, which is a bit over priced compared to most other DLC's on the market (key word being "most"). There isn't much new here to the formula either, but the Twitchers from the first game make a frequent appearance. I wonder why they took those things out anyways… Anyways, if you really enjoyed your Dead Space 2 experiences (as I did), then this is not a bad purchase at all. But there is more than likely a better way to be spending your money.

+Exciting fire fights and set-pieces
+Constantly flowing into new areas

-Way too short to justify the price
-Mostly recycled areas
-Adds almost nothing new to the formula
-Unnecessary tutorial that makes for a slow start
