A good conversion of a classic arcade racer.

User Rating: 7.8 | Daytona USA SAT
Daytona USA is a conversion of the popular arcade game. It was released in 1995 but despite it's age, it still holds up as a decent racing game on the Sega Saturn.

Daytona USA is pretty good when it comes to play modes. Some of these include Single Race, Time Trial and Endurance. These can be played against computer opponents or against a second player.

There are five different locations, all of which provide a good challenge. Some more courses would have been good the variety in the courses that are in the game makes up for it.

The selection of cars is another plus. Though there is only 8 to choose from, each one controls completly differently, whether it's just by top speed and acceleration or the actual handling of the cars. They will all take a little getting used to but once you have figured them out, you will realise which ones are suited for certain tracks and race styles.

The actual Races are surprisingly solid and quite challenging. Everything is extremely fast paced and will take some skill to beat your opponents, avoid crashes and beat the clock.

Graphically, Daytona USA is comparable to the majority of racing games on the Saturn. Everything from the cars to tracks is brightly coloured and detailed. The game also manages to keep a steady frame rate, which is good considering all the action on screen.

The only real downside is the constant pop up that occurs during the races. While it's not really distracting it is noticeable. Luckily it's not so bad that it makes the game unplayable.

Daytona USA has a good selection of music for the most part. While it is just a generic mix of rock and dance music, it does the job and really adds to the fast pace of the races. Saying that though, it can get repetitive if you're playing for long periods of time.

When it comes to sound effects, it's really a mixed bag. The cars sound ok but could've had a heavy and louder sound. There's some crowd noises that aren't really noticeable and some breif lines said by the pit crew. The voices sound ok for the most part but are sometimes quite unclear.

Overall, Daytona USA is a pretty solid Racer and despite a few flaws in the sound and graphics, this game should be in any Saturn collection.
