A rather bland plot only slightly wears down this addicting, immersive action game for DS.

Custom Robo Arena is an action game about CUSTOMIZING your very own ROBOT, and challenging other robots in ARENAS. The title says it all. The controls are very smooth, although using the secondary weapons is tricky at first. The game may seem easy at first but as you progress it throws some pesky challenges at you. When you lose a battle multiple times, the player can choose to play with handicaps or not, granting him/her a certain choice of difficulty.

The plot is very simple. You, the protagonist, move to a new town and school. There you meet Liv and Dennis. Together, your little team must struggle their way to the top to ultimately win the Robo Cup. There is a lot of text in this game, most of it unessential. The game does get much better as you progress though, as you unlock better weapons and robos, as well as discovering some intriguing plot twists. Regardless, if the story doesn't manage to drive you on, then the battle system surely will.

Your robo and your opponent's both start with 1000 HP. You can jump, dash through the air, run around to dodge bullets, fire, launch your bomb, launch your pods, or melée your opponent if you're close enough. Later on, you also unlock a special ability called the Soulboost, which temporarily increases your robo's powers dramatically. All these abilities work out very well and the battles feel smooth and fun.

The music is rather repetitive, but catchy nonetheless. Not bad, but not fantastic either. The graphics aren't drastically impressive for DS standards, but they're still quite good and a lot of detail is put into the robos.
