Best controls from a kart racer to date!

User Rating: 9 | CTR: Crash Team Racing PS

CTR is a mascot kart racer that I've constantly revisited over the years. Many Nintendo fans call it a poor mans Mario Kart, but I couldn't disagree more. Nostalgia aside, I can say without a doubt that CTR is the best kart racer I have ever played. In fact, this PS1 classic has held up so well over the years that I still play it to this day. CTR brings all the standard kart racing content to the table. Power ups, original maps, a wide cast of characters, a dedicated single player story mode and multiplayer support. These are all great features and enough to occupy any new player for quite some time, but none of these are what set CTR aside from the rest of the racers at the time. What Naughty Dog got spot on with their first racing game were the controls! CTR has the tightest and most responsive controls I've ever experienced in any kart racer to date. The game feels fast and the controls respond perfectly to match. Personally I feel that this puts CTR leagues above Mario Kart which feels boring and outdated in comparison. The added boost mechanic that CTR masterfully employs allows for a powerful speed boost whenever your kart power slides or lands a large jump. These speed boosts reward players for taking risks which ensures a variety of play styles and techniques are developed keeping game-play fresh. The addition of the boost mechanic makes drifting a breeze and allow corners to be taken at high speeds. Rather than becoming a repetitive nuisance that kill the speed of your kart, corners become a welcomed challenge that can be used to outplay other racers. If you are looking for a kart racer that feels fast, frantic and exciting with tight controls and plenty of drifting I can't recommend CTR enough. Check it out, you won't be disappointed!
