While not as good as it's PC brother - Command and Conquer is a welcome addition to the Playstation.

Command and Conquer is, if you didn't already know - a war simulator placing you in the hands of a general - who has a duty to arm his troops, create a base - and crush his enemies. Released to huge acclaim on the PC all the way back in 1995, 2 years before it's release on the Playstation, this was an ambitious and difficult game to port. But Westwood have done an amazing job. For those used to 3D characters running around and more action based titles - than you are best to steer clear of this. While a competent strategy game - it stays true to the roots of strategy based titles and although it is easy to get into - this is not typical Playstation fair. If however, you like your strategy titles - then you can't go wrong with this. You start as one of 2 factions - either the GDI, who are the typical peace keeping force - or the Brotherhood of Nod, a world threatening terrorist organisation. The 2 factions play differently - with GDI missions mainly involving building a base and finding a supply of minerals - a way to increase your funds. You also will be training your troops, and creating some more manpower in the form of Tanks. As the Brotherhood of Nod, while you share all the features of the GDI - you are tasked with more devilish missions like making life difficult for innocent civilians. The game looks good - and plays well. The noticeable difference of playing with a controller - rather than a PC mouse doesn't weigh to heavily on your mind, and the game has been made to feel like a controller is the only way to play. In-game cutscenes are really cool to watch - mixing CG with live action video, giving a sense you are actually in a real army briefing - and while they are poorly acted - they give a good sense of reality in a war like situation. It is different to anything else on the Playstation - and furthers the gap between Command and Conquer - and the myriad of other games available. Not that that is a bad thing. Rather - it is good. Originality aside - the game is plain fun to play. Although it has a lower resolution than its PC brother - which is expected, Westwood have done a commendable job to make the game look this good. Explosions are impressive - and the amount of control you have over your troops is great. Sound is excellent. This is one part of the game where it really shines. It is simple - but within it's simplicity lies it's excellence. It really draws you into the game. The game is hard - with some missions, especially the later ones taking some time to complete. But you will continue to play on regardless. There are 15 missions for GDI, as well as 13 NOD missions. Plus there are 15 covert Ops missions, and 5 more which are exclusive to the Playstation. All this is packed onto 2 disks. The game is big - and will take a long time to complete. The game is without a 2 player option - which is boggling. This could have been easily accomplished, and it is a shame to see that the title has been shipped without it - as it is the best way to play the game. PC gamers have been having that thrill for over 2 years now - and it is a real shame that Westwood didn't include this option. Thankfully - this doesn't overshadow the great playability of this title. Simply - if you have yet to play a strategy game - this is an excellent introduction. While not as polished as on the PC, this is a welcome addition to the Playstation library - one that is filled with too many fighters and platformers. Strategy titles are more suited to the PC - but the Playstation debut of Command and Conquer has shown that even a game as complex as this can be accomplished well on the Playstation. Recommended gaming.
