Dictionary: Shooter - Answer = COLD WINTER

User Rating: 9.6 | Cold Winter PS2
Very few games that I have played tend to be what I would call a true shooter. Killzone to me was a true shooter. Cold Winter was a true shooter. I think that Black due out in February should also be a true shooter. Sorry you fans of the Socom Series, but they are not shooters. They are more stealth than shooting. Which is fine. I’ve played the first two through extensively And thoroughly enjoyed them, but they are not true shooters. The Medal of Honor series, Call of Duty series, Red Faction series, Brothers in Arms are very, very close to being true shooters. Area 51 is the closest to a true shooter and hangs on the very edge. On-line Call of Duty and Area 51 are true shooters.
I’ve mentioned “True Shooter” quite a few times. Exactly what am I talking about. To me a true shooter is mainly about the guns and killing the bad guys, ect. At points of the game(and you know where) Running and Gunning may be you best strategy. At other times you may be better off Duck, Cover, and Shoot. They shouldn’t rely on stealth although at times this should be able to be used to get the advantage on an enemy, as this can be satisfying also. When the enemy is hit by your BIG GUN they should Bleed, Cry Out, and generally Squall like a baby. If you throw a grenade into the enemies room and it’s a “small”
room the enemies should “DIE”!!!! When you throw a grenade and it’s lying between the enemies legs, and explodes and they keep on moving towards you-This is a problem. Puzzle solving should be kept to a minimum. While you are solving puzzles you are not blasting enemies and extinguishing their horrible lives. Sorry you fans of Half-Life-Fine game-Not a shooter. Sure you get to shoot a gun around 75 percent puzzle solving. This is not a shooter.
Have you ever wondered why so many game reviews like games only on-line and not as a single player. It’s because the online modes of game play tend to orient towards more of shooter losing many of the single player elements that get in the way of the game being a “True Shooter”. Thus the game becomes a “True Shooter”.
So what makes Cold Winter so Superb? It has all of the elements that embody the “True Shooter”, plus some awesome unique elements. Rag doll physics make the enemies respond in a more life-like manner when they die, or fly though the air and land when exploded. When the enemies are shot their arms, legs, heads can fall off. In fact you can shoot an enemies legs off and they will fall over and you can finish decimating them. When they are shot blood sprays all over the walls behind them and bloody body chunks go flying everywhere. There is something satisfying about a head shot that explodes the enemies head like watermelon, or watching the enemies head roll down an incline towards you after it has been separated from his body. The story line is quite engaging, reminding me a little bit of Half-Life with some James Bond mixed in for good measure. The story will keep you interested and leave you wanting to find out the next chapter. The level where you are in the night club and the enemies start blasting like crazy, the arabesque music starts, playing, guns blazing, body parts and blood flying everywhere was one of the most adrenaline rushed gaming moments I have ever experienced. The controls are accurate and precise. Grenades devastate enemies the way they should. Sniper rifles are accurate and very damaging for head shots. Pistols are accurate but you need many shots to kill an enemy-Just the way it should be . Big guns create more damage than the smaller guns. You can get through the easy level without missing your children’s childhood. The harder levels are progressively harder-Hey, I thought the easy level meant that it was easy to get through. In a lot of games the easy level is only easy for the guy or gal who plays shooters 24/7 or the game designer. This games difficulty levels are just right. Once you get through the game the first time you can replay any level. You should not have to go through a games missions three times to replay any level. I’ve replayed this game over and over. You can use objects for cover -throw objects in the game-and use objects you find and combine them into useful weapons like Molotov cocktails. If Black is this good then we will have something to cheer about again.
