A decent addition to the collection of any loyal Civ fan.

User Rating: 7 | Civilization II: Test of Time PC
While Civ II: Test of Time could be considered a sort of bast**d child of the series, it is worth getting a little involved in nonetheless.

By category, then, we'll look at what it has to offer:

Graphics: Not bad for the day. Like any good Civ game, it is colorful and varied, so at least you shouldn't be under-stimulated.

Gameplay: Here's where this title redeems itself. The normal mode, set in our own world, is actually not that exciting. In fact I hardly played that mode because it was simply too boring. The kicker is that Test of Time comes with two other modes of play: Sci-Fi and Fantasy. Both modes are equally enjoyable, and offer some interesting opportunities. For example, in the sci-fi mode you can eventually get into space. In the fantasy mode, you can go underground or even underwater. This makes for some interesting variation in strategy, as well as a nice break from the normal mode.

Content: You'll find plenty of different ways to play the game, and a lot of that has to do with how many options you have in terms of content. There are many units in every mode, and enough buildings to keep you busy for a few ages. The landscapes are varied enough to keep it interesting. You shouldn't be disappointed here.

Story: You won't find much in the way of story, sadly. There are still downloadable scenarios available at places like CivFanatics, though of course development is now focused on newer games (Civ 4 or 5). This is probably this title's biggest weakness. It does end up feeling unstructured and disjointed, especially in later ages (in any mode). This is what keeps the game from a higher score.

Overall: If you miss the older Civ games, this is a fun one to try. I spent many happy hours in the Fantasy and Sci-Fi modes that I do not regret, and I think you'll find it enjoyable as well.
