OVERVIEW

Captain America and the Avengers is a port from the hit arcade game. Even though this game is not as good as the arcade, it still makes for a good gaming experience on the Super Nintendo. The setting takes place in the present day Marvel comic book realm. The evil super villain named Red Skull is assembling the greatest force the world has ever seen. Marvel villains like Whirlwind, Mandrin, and the Juggernaut heed Red Skull's call. Once Red Skull assembles his team he then plans to use a mind control device on the entire world and make the people fall under his command. Now it is up to the Avengers to stop this madness. The Avengers in this game include Captain America, Iron Man, Vision and Hawkeye.

GAMEPLAY

Captain America and the Avengers is a fun beat'em up type game that lets you and another friend play together. Each Avenger has slightly different attacks so the characters play in different ways. Captain America is all for truth and justice, plus he is a born leader. Cap's special move involves him throwing his shield which acts like a boomerang. Iron Man is a very intelligent engineer and his suit of armor can wield high energy repulsor rays. Vision is a logically minded cyborg capable of casting out solar beams from his forehead. Hawkeye is an incredible marksman with his bow and arrow as the weapon of choice. The controls are simple to learn, for each character, and work well for this game.

The objective for each level is to fight your way through Red Skull's robot henchmen and then defeat a Super Villian at the end. Red Skull's henchmen consist of robots with shields, grappling hooks and jet packs. After you dispose of these lackeys, a very difficult boss battle occurs. This brings a nice challenge to the game. Keep in mind that some levels have a "mid-point" boss too. Now I will say that the level design is very well done mixing platforming and fighting. However, the fighting can get repetitive. Another fun feature about Captain America and the Avengers is the in-game story parts. The story parts may be a little cheesy but it creates a comic book like atmosphere.

GRAPHICS & SOUND

The graphics and level design give the game a nice comic book feel.

The music is thrilling in this game. The heroic melodies will get you pumped up for some more superhero action. Another great feature is the sound effects. The punches, kicks and energy blasts fit the context of the game.

CONCLUSION

Captain America and the Avengers may not be as good as the arcade game but it is still a fun game. I would recommend this game to anyone who either likes Marvel comics or beat-em up type games. So now it's up to you to stop Red Skull because "America still needs your help".
