Fighters Beware!

User Rating: 7.4 | Capcom vs. SNK 2 EO: Millionaire Fighting 2001 GC
Capcom vs. SNK 2 is one of the best vs. crossovers ever made. The EO edition added for the GameCube version has that one-stick movement for special attacks and supers. I am a fighting game fan, and I love fighting games whether they are arcade-based or simulation-based. Anyhow, Capcom vs. SNK 2 EO delivers, in a sense that I appreciated to that extent. Graphic-wise, this game looked amazing. The fighters looked detailed, especially Ryu and Ken. Some of them had a Street Fighter 3-esque makeover, which I appreciated. The environments look real and fantastic, too. Some common locations had been selected for the "Mark of the Millennium (or Millionaire Fighting) 2001" Tournament, such as London, Nairobi, Osaka and many others. The blows look spectacular, when they connect. The transitions of the battles and the menu screens are very smooth. The music was probably un-related to the location, but otherwise sounds great. The blows sound appropriate, too. Their shouts and talk can be heard, too. Some are pretty unclear. This version has a couple of control mechanisms. One of them is called the GC-ISM. One high advantage of this is that you can easily activate the special and super attacks with consistency. The problem is that you cannot do an effective chain combo (when I say this, I mean stuff like Punch-Punch-Kick). That is very hard to do with this scheme. Another is called AC-ISM. You can do all the stuff like in the arcade, and the buttons are laid out exactly they way they are. The only problem is it is difficult to pull off specials or supers using the GameCube controller as an arcade-style controller. OK. Where do I begin with respect to gameplay? There are over 40 combatants both in the world of Capcom (mostly Street Fighter) and SNK (mostly King of Fighters). That is a hefty amount heading into a tournament like this. You can battle in arcade mode [in Ratio mode (like in the last game), 3-on-3 melee (King of Fighters style), or One-on-One duels (Street Fighter style).] The 'grooves' have returned with special abilities for each. They also brought in a V-ISM-esque groove (for custom combo abilities), a rage gauge, and a Street Fighter 3 style groove. There is also Survival mode, where the goal is to survive until your fighter finally falls. You can also make your favourite fighter into a different colour. Or customize a groove of your own. All-in-all, it is very decent. But, not enough replayability to suit some. So, overall, If you like fighting games, go grab this one. I know you will have a good time combo-ing other guys as much as everyone else. If you played this in the arcade, I know you will like it as much as I do. If you played this on the PlayStation 2, it probably feels the same as it was and it may be less fun.
