A good game with a compelling storyline that is hard to stop playing

User Rating: 8.5 | Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 X360
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 is an action-packed game that is hard to stop playing. This game takes place in the near future and as such has weapons that are basically modern. Modern Warfare 2 is mostly a first person shooter, although the game includes more things than just shooting (such as driving cars and boats in some missions). There are multiple things to do in this game: this game includes a main campaign mode, online play (i.e. play via XBOX live) as well as a "Special Ops" mode where you do various missions that you can play solo or go co-op with a buddy.

The story of the main campaign mode takes place 5 years after the events of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (which I haven't played) and ultranationalist (wikipedia uses that phrase in their article on Modern Warfare 2, I didn't coin it) and anti-American forces have taken control of Russia. The storyline revolves around the tense relationship between the U.S. and Russia and follows a variety of characters. You start out playing an Army Ranger named Joseph Allen who is training a group of Afghan soldiers in Afghanistan and then later helps clear out a village full of militants. After seeing Allen's performance in battle, Lt. Gen. Shepherd assigns Allen to a special counter-terrorism Task Force and has him go undercover to try to catch a Russian terrorist named Vladimir Makarov. I will not give much detail what happens next since I do not want to reveal too much of the story (play the game to see what happens) but it basically revolves around catching Makarov and dealing with the problems he causes. The second mission has you playing British Sergeant Gary "Roach" Sanderson, a member of the SAS and the elite multi-national Task Force 101, who is in Russian territory retrieving an important device called an ACS from a fallen American Satellite. The story involves multiple missions that flow nicely into one another, and it is very hard to turn the game off. The Storyline is well written with good characters and many twists and turns while the missions themselves offer a fun variety of action packed tasks (some of which are action-oriented, others of which are stealth-oriented). Missions will have you driving a variety of vehicles, such as boats and snow-mobiles (or snow-machines as Alaskans call them).

This is a game that I first saw on Gamespot, when I watched a preview of it on E3 with my cousin. The preview showed the second mission where Sgt. Roach and Capt. MacTavish are ice-climbing and riding on snow-mobiles in order to retrieve the downed ACS that I told you about.

This is a good game for fans of action games and military games. For those who are fans of World War II games, unlike the first three Call of Duty games, Modern Warfare is not a WWII game it is a modern game. This is a game that is fun and engaging and one that I would recommend.
